Best car to meet my needs

I am thinking of trading in my 2006 1.6 diesel ford focus but can't decide what to get next- I will be going for secondhand as I can't afford to buy new.

I do a fair amount of driving in wet and muddy country lanes in my commute to work and the rest on dual carriageway and city roads (16 miles one way per day). I do about 15,000 miles per year in total.

My husband is over 6ft so can't go for anything too small, but need something economical, reliable and ideally with a high driving position as I have back trouble and getting into a standard car (even my focus) isn't always comfortable.

Any suggestions for what to go for?

What is wrong with what you have?
  • Need something that's easier to get in and out of - driving position is a bit low for my needs now

    Nissan Qashqai.

The new 2014 Nissan Qashqai is the best small SUV or crossover you can buy. It builds on the Qashqai’s original strengths by offering 4x4 styling but with space and running costs to rival a Volkswagen Golf.

The new Nissan Qashqai adds a huge range of clever in-car technology, some impressively economical petrol and diesel engines and a choice of manual or Xtronic automatic gearboxes. The interior quality is as good as it gets in what is now a crowded crossover class that includes rivals like the Skoda Yeti, Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-5.

Thanks to extended dimensions, space and practicality inside have been improved - although they’re not class leading and there’ll be no replacement for the 7-seat Qashqai +2 model. There’s more clever tech under the skin too, making sure the new Qashqai is comfortable and secure to drive.

    Toyota Verso? Nissan Juke?
  • Thanks for the suggestions, but as I am nearing retirement and only working part-time I am not looking for a brand new car (very sadly as the new Qashqai does look amazing).

Nissan Juke and Qashqai, while Nissans aren't always the best looking cars they are very good cars. I don't know about the new shape Honda Jazz, but the slightly older one has a high driving position and it is higher than the position in a Focus, I think they stopped making this model in 08 or 09, somewhere around then.

Ideally if you are comfortable it would be useful if we knew your budget, are you going to be adding, or just using the value of your focus to purchase a new car?

My Nissan Note is easily the worst car I have ever owned, it has many many faults. A friend had a Qashqai that went catastrophically wrong just outside of warranty. I think the Renault involvement with Nissan is sonething to be wary of. I had Almeras up to 2005 with never any problems but the newer ones seem dodgy. Yes if you get a sound one you'll be ok but they are expensive to fix if they do go wrong!
