Hi I have a new nokia lumia 520 phone. Can anyone tell me why it keeps switching itself off and also when I'm making a call where you have to follow a menu and press certain numbers I can't as the screen is blank.

Also does anyone know if you have to pay for postage to return faulty goods to amazon when dropped off at a shop or get someone to pick them up please as this is what I ll be doing with this phone if I can't get it sorted. thank you

When you say it's new, how new is it?
    Is it fully charged?

Is the screen blank because it has locked once you are in the call? (i.e. to stop you pressing buttons with your ear)
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Once you take the phone away from your ear, the display should come back on- it should only be locked when the sensor in the top right corner (I think) of the screen is covered. And it shouldn't turn itself off (although the 520 does have a "feature" where if it's face down it goes to silent mode- so it appears you're not getting any calls if it's face-down in your bag, for instance. You can switch off this quirk in the settings though).

For Amazon returns, if you bought it from a Marketplace seller on Amazon, you need to contact them to find out their returns policy. Even if it's not free to return, you might be able to persuade them to refund you the postage costs if they've sent you a faulty unit. If you purchased from Amazon itself, they usually provide returns labels. But you need to go into My Account and request a return for both.

Hi thanks it looks like I ll be sending it back because as soon as dial the number and press call the screen goes blank and remains blank and that's that. I then have to open the back take the battery out and switch it on again.

I think I bought it from amazon itself as I've tracked my order and it says I have till the end of this month to return it.

    UPDATE.

I made a mental note of what you said about the sensor at the top of the phone which I didn t even know about and when I peeled off the screen protector which I put on recently it works tadaaaa so it's got a reprieve from being sent back today. So thank you again :)

Decent screen protectors have a hole for the sensor.

Glad to see you seem to have got the calling problem sorted.
Regarding the phone switching off if you go to the settings menu you can adjust the time interval before the phone switches off.

On the phone again under settings there is a item for Nokia help and it has a good range of info and. FAQs

I mean the film that you peel off and put on. With regard to a decent one it was specifically for a nokia lumia and it did have a hole in it .

Hi yes I've got that set to 5 minutes and I did see the nokia help thing thanks.
  • I had a similar problem with this phone which my teenage son has

Even a screen protector made for the phone didn't work.

I think the answer is a decent case and no screen protector.

A very good phone for the money though.
