SKY Bb Unlimited

I have the above package with a Netgear router and I only get a speed of just over 3mb/s.

I had an online chat with Sky who suggested I change my channel to 11 to (haha) "increase my bandwith". No difference at all. All connections, filters etc checked.

My Qs :-
Can/will they improve my speed when I get back to them to complain?
What is the Sky hub I see online (as opposed to conventional router), is it for fibre optic high speed stuff?

Your speed is a function of your physical distance from the telephone exchange.
There may be a fault at your end, or with the line.
Log in to your router and post your line statistics.

The Sky hub is just their name for the latest router, it is compatible with ADSL and VDSL

    Connection Speed = 4094 kbps/796 kbps
    Line Attenuation = 35.0 dB/19.7 dB
    Noise Margin = 3.5 dB/13.5 dB

You may be able to get a new, FREE Sky Hub (click on 'upgrade' to order - just make sure it comes up as 'FREE')
A Booster is also available for FREE

Also your wifi speeds will be totally dependant on the local connection to your modem combined with the wifi signal in your home. I live in a block with countless wifi signals and actually prefer to connect my computers directly with an ethernet cable, as that eliminates any wifi problems.

With your line attenuation you should be able to get over 12 Mbps. However there is a lot of noise on the line.
Are you plugged into the master socket, and do you have wired extensions?
Also ate there any crackles pops and hissing on your line?

I have to plug my router into an extension and the line is bad but I still get speeds up to 15 Mbps, even though the phone is barely usable. Most of the issues are at their end, yet they run through their scripts as if I have not tried them. When I tell them that it has been good for 18 months and has dropped in the last few days they still ask me to move my computer to an area with no power sockets.

Do you have your router plugged into your BT master socket? Or is it on a long extension somewhere else in your house?

You should be getting more than 4MB with a line attenuation of 35 dB. I have an incredibly long line at 52 dB and I get 5MB with Sky as well (ADSL2+ LLU). You have some form of interference or internal wiring causing your downstream sync rate to be so low.

Can you remove your BT master socket's faceplate and plug your router into the test socket behind it? Then check your router stats again, you maywell be shocked.

    This page should help you..

If you find your sync rate significantly improves in the test socket, try remove the ring wire if it hasn't been already. Following this guide..

    EDIT -
Just seen your post while I was making this. Are you saying your phone line is bad quality or suffers from interference as well? If so this will definitely have an impact on your line. You could have a physical line fault somewhere between your home and local green cab or exchange which would require a BT engineer call out. But I would follow my advice re plugging the router into the master test socket first, this will rule out it being anything internal.

Thanks for answers. In reply :-

My router is plugged into the master socket.

Fyi - I also use home plugs which work fine, but recent performance has dipped since I was sent a new router.

I have a free wireless booster ordered although not really relevant here I wouldn't think. Problem appears to be at source.

I can't seem to get a new hub free online. Is this known to be better than standard router?

My landline seems ok but I don't use it much to make phone calls so it's not regularly monitored.

Sorry if I have missed anyone.
