I haven't done windows but did do my huge mirror.

I never thought of mirrors and I have zillions in the house as I have a thing for them! Brilliant. :D

Oooh, I should definitely not replace my wooden spoon with my steam mop for defrosting the freezer. Because I don't hit ice with a wooden spoon or spray it with water saltier than the Red Sea, honest.

If you're as sad as me, it cleans skirting board up lovely :-D

:rotfl: Health and safety would love us lot!
Skirting boards now on my growing list. I'm sad, too. :j

I didn't use mine to defrost the fridge and freezer at DD's student flat which was so frozen that the doors wouldn't shut and took hours and hours.

Not for emulsion paint or eggshell ,it will take it off.

Another safety first girl, well done! ;)

Just how effectively would it take paint off? I was wondering about that and thinking a neg could be turned into a positive with that.

Ariba - when you did your windows was it this cold? I'm still scared.

A word of caution to others. DO NOT boast about your steam mops to your relatives, especially if they live local. After waxing lyrical about its merits I'm now down for steaming my mum's rug next week.

Its more a gradual smearing. I used it on a door where the grubby hands had been and there was the wood peering back at me from under the paint. It managed to 'clean' one of the stairwell walls but the paint was coming off on the towel I was drying off with.
Doesn't seem to do anything where paintwork would be waterproof anyway.

My steamer is a tank one on casters (bought from Lidls a couple of years ago). I usually use it for giving the bathroom/shower a good clean and also for indoor windows.

How effective is steam for cleaning the oven? I have a rather nasty baked on patch on the bottom of mine which is not shifting very well with elbow grease.

Sold... I desperately need something lighter than my mighty Bissell to do carpets.. especially the stairs.. and my tiles, and my slate kitchen floor.. and the ceiling in the bathroom and my windows.. and the cats.. and defrost the freezer which I did not defrost with 2 hair dryers on daisychained extension cables.. that would be dangerous..

  • I have the M.R. one - do you use ionised water like it suggests? I just use tap water as I have no idea where to get this water from!?!

Mine is a vax one. I've tried to clean a very grubby rug today but not sure I was doing it right. It needed scrubbing really :o vinegar and bicarb so far (I've done half)

How do you clean carpet with one? Mines the upright stick type with triangle floor bit.

cheerfulness4 remarked in an earlier post about my oh using a hairdryer to defrost freezer. See quotes below!

My friend was doing that and her little girl was mesmerised watching it melt till she got her head too close and her hair got tangled in the hairdryer. Ended in tears. :p
  • azzabazza - I'd definitely give the bottom of your cooker a go with the steam mop. This cooker that came to us looked to have had years of grease burnt onto the door. It took time but not lots of elbow grease. Clean and sparkling now!

pigpen - "the freezer which I did not defrost with 2 hair dryers on daisychained extension cables.. that would be dangerous.."
Well impressed that you wouldn't defrost your freezer in such a dangerous (and ingenious fashion) :p 2 hairdryers eh? Now that's determination. :D

Lindsay - I just use tap water. But then again I'm known to be a rebel in my appliance usages. ;)

bossymoo- I've given my rug a steady run over with it, just as you would your hard floors, but giving a little time hovering over the areas that are marked. (about count to 10 then back and forth and repeat till stain gone).

The stair carpet is very old and dull in colour but the steam is fetching out the vibrant colours and lifting the pile quite well. That might take a few goes though as I'd hazard a guess this carpets 20 odd years old.

I'm wondering if it would be any good for giving the dishwasher a going over to make it ultra fresh inside and the washing machine, too. Any thoughts?

Wouldn't you just run them on their hottest cycle? Even on my 40deg one the DW is full of steam when I open it!
