As it was a surge that caused the issue...then yes?

I'm aware that their not needed in the bulk of the time, but for a fairly small investment their a reasonable layer of added safety.

I seem to remember reading that more damage is done to IT equipment by brownouts than by spikes.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

We're lucky to have pretty clean electricity in this country, a friend who moved to Canada has had all kinds of problems with the supply! Surge protection is probably a good idea if you have a straight choice, but don't lose sleep over it.

You draw 9 amps from a small collection of computer equipment? I would have been surprised if it was more than 2 amps from the list you give...
2A is only 460W, there are video cards out there that need pretty much all that power in order to function at full capacity.

It was a while ago I added it all up - I should add the NAS box is an old PC doing the job, the main PC has a 750w PSU. It's a combined printer/ scanner etc.

A 750W PSU doesn't actually draw that amount, it will only draw what the PC wants at any given moment in time.

Yes I know - which is why I stated "on full load" originally. I just added the max wattages up, realising that not all of them would be running flat out all the time.

It is perfectly alright to use an extension lead.

Beware of daisy-chaining extensions, as the Earth voltage can be inconsistent from one end of the chain to the other!

surge protection is a waste of money imo
Possibly - but not much money. My Belkin Surgemaster says it has a connected equipment lifetime warranty for £100,000 so I think I'll keep it connected!

I wonder if anybody has ever claimed. I have a friend whose PC was 'incinerated' by a close lightning strike - but he didn't have a surge protector.
