Hello
I don't even know what to say...........most of you won't probably even remember me! I did amazingly well for approximately 18 months then from March onwards I have struggled massively not to drink. In fact the only way I can manage to not drink is if I am working a night shift (front line career). I have just managed 3 nights as I was working nights EXCEPT I had wine with dinner prior to going to work. This is new and is only one glass with dinner but nonetheless......

Hi Jake, most of them aren't around on here although some are still on MSE. Welcome back, I hope you find it good being back on here. I was working out how long ago I found the thread and was reminiscing recently about Molly Polly, Budgie, Jo, Miss Piggy and all. I don't know how I would have coped without this thread and its predecessors, so to all posters past and present, I just wanted to say a huge 'Thank you!'
Cutting down isn't an option for me; what I had to break was the habit of drinking. If I have just one, I'll jump straight back to where I was before and I don't want to live like that any more. (I've said that before, but that's the way I have to think about it, so I need to keep repeating it. Sorry if the mantra's boring.)
I lurked for months, in a desultory 'I-know-it's-there-if-and-when-I-need-it' kind of way, doing 'Are you drinking too much?' and 'Is alcohol a problem for you?' questionaires for a couple of years - all of which indicated that I 'might' (euphamism for 'Wow! Your poor liver!' with hindisght) want to think about what I was doing.
If anyone is interested, this is the best one I found:
https://ncadd.org/learn-about-alcohol/alcohol-abuse-self-test
and for information, I scored 13, but two of the sober blogs I read mentioned that they scored 16 on it before they stopped drinking and I am incredibly relieved I stopped when I did. It's very highly structered, so I've kept a copy of my answers because it indicates exactly where someone with a possible drink problem is heading.
If all of that sounds preachy or evangelical to anyone, let me know and I'll delete it. I'm not opposed to anyone else drinking, I'm just aware that it's not something I have any control over any more. ('You do your thing, and I'll do mine' kind of of thinking.)
17/30 please, Shaggy.Better is good enough.0 -
Had a minor operation yesterday, so know I won't be drinking for at least a few days, so calling early today, 16/26 AFDs.0

I wasn't in on the original thread but I remember all those people. The thread was very different in those days. A great bunch and I do hope they're all doing OK. I think some leave because they've achieved what they want and can go it alone. Others I'm afraid and then won't post. That's a shame as this thread isn't judgemental. So :wave:to any lurkers.
ETA: By different I didn't mean better just different. There seemed to be far more hardened drinkers/alcoholics and a cutter down like me sometimes felt a little uncomfortable.Honey_Bear wrote: »Cutting down isn't an option for me; what I had to break was the habit of drinking.

That's my philosophy too HB. Fortunately the recent threads have all been that way. I've never wanted to achieve any more than cut down.
Definitely AF tonight.
Hope you're OK Barny. You're doing brilliantly but a little help never goes amiss.
9 AFDs please Shaggy.0
