Roll up, Roll up. A New Month, A New Challenge.SET A31 days up for grabs!
Everyone Welcome!!!What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -

TBH - not reallyToo much work - happy to do it in 2017 though. Sooo...see next post.....

Good luck with it, Scatterbrain! I can't speak highly enough of Belle and the whole idea of it - it changed my life forever. Keep posting and letting us know how it's going, won't you.I felt the AFDs followed on from last year when I changed from being someone who was naturally spendthrift into someone who was a natural saver - which is partly just the influence of Money Saving Expert as a website .... I suppose it was a kind of self-discipline that I acquired but also it became a pleasure and a habit. In a way it felt the same this year - at the start I was getting through the AFDs without too much difficulty but it was the days I drank that I really looked forward to, but this changed during the course of the year and now I don't necessarily bother with the days I can officially drink on and take them off instead - somewhere along the way there was a tipping point. .... So I wonder if self-discipline isn't in some ways just a shift in terms of what you enjoy? ... it takes a certain amount of arduous slog to get there, is the thing, and sometimes the arduous slog feels as though it will be that way forever, like running uphill, and so people give up. But if they didn't give up they would arrive at a point when it would actually cease to be a slog and blossom into something clear and clean and fabulous.
I owe a pretty massive thanks to MSE and Martin Lewis, as do countless thousands, maybe millions? I'm sure he isn't reading, but I will say anyway that if it wasn't for him setting up MSE back in the day, I would probably still be heavily in debt and drinking too much and wondering miserably how to stop. For the fact that life isn't like that now, I am very grateful.
I echo every single word of your post, CathyBird and I couldn't have put it better myself so thank you for putting something I feel very strongly into the right words. I owe Martin Lewis, everyone who keeps the site running or keeps the forums going by posting a massive, massive debt of gratitude because it's turned my life around.
Personally, it was the Flylady Thread which helped me to get some level of control of the house, which in turn led to needing some control over myself and that meant tackling the booze habit.
The self-discipline thing is tough to begin with, and what helped me through it was a quote I found on a blog, which I found through a link in a post on the Flylady Thread, 'No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have trained by it.' It sounds very po-faced but I've found it to be true, the point being exactly as you said - the arduous or painful bit doesn't last and is replaced by something much better - in my case of giving up the booze, a feeling of freedom.
Good luck to everyone who's doing Dry January and in the meantime, I hope you have a lovely New Year's Eve.
Special mention of my gratitude to Shaggy, for keeping this thread together. Without you it would be far less effective and I wanted to say a special Thank You for keeping it going.
31/31 please, Shaggy.Better is good enough.0 -
