i remain quite conscious towards my appearance whenever i have y move out whether for my job or for other purposes so naturally i pay a proper attention on all the fitting i own for my outings .. and yes i love mixing things up !

That wee dot in your signature has had me scratching at the screen to try and get it off for the last minute!
As for updating my wardrobe, I don't really do it. I am a fan of colour and texture so I will buy something based on the fabric very often.

    Interesting thread.

It's quite topical for me as on New Year's Day I spent most of it in my bedroom with Desperate Housewives boxset in the background, I cleared out all the drawers wiped them out, and divided it into three piles, one to keep, one to throw in the bin (shrunk in the drier/hole in it etc) and one to ebay/charity shop.

I actually have bought a load of clothes recently but not because I follow trends / fashion really - I tend to stick to simple things, lots of jeans, plain t-shirts in different colours, soft jumpers, simple dresses, some skirts, basically there's nothing in my wardrobe that I think is too trend based like neon or half-sleeve jumpers.

It so happens that I have changed my looks a lot this year but that's because I went and recently got myself a whole new lot of workwear but I thought it was justified as I probably about 20% of my wardrobe was dedicated to it, which I was wearing 6 days of the week whilst I had loads of 'off-duty' clothes which I didn't spend that much time wearing.

I've also gone for a more feminine look, I tended to wear a lot of bootcut jeans with hoodies but now wear skinny jeans with knit jumpers and pastels and so on. I have also started wearing dresses/skirts the summer just gone but that was because I had some nasty scars on my leg which finally cleared up so I look a lot different now than a year ago but I wouldn't expect to make a big change like this all the time.

In terms of wardrobe, I arrange by
    • string vests
    • and normal vests both of which I would never wear as a top, I only put them under things on occasion,
    • t-shirts,
    • long sleeve t-shirts,
    • jumpers and cardigans,
    • chunky jumpers and cardigans,
    • jeans,
    • casual trousers that aren't jeans,
    • smart trousers,
    • skirts,
    • dresses,
    • suits,
    • underwear,
    • socks/tights.
    • work shirts
    • casual shirts
Within those categories I arrange by colour.

Interested to hear what others do.

:rotfl:I thought at first you meant the type worn by Rab.C.Nesbitt!!!

I'm guessing you mean camisole type tops. ;)

    Thanks for all the replies.

I do have a lot of clothes, but it's in chaos, even Gok would be hard pushed to find actual 'outfits' in there.

Even having all those clothes, some wardrobe basics I simply don't own, little black dress, smart trousers etc... but I have umpteen dresses that are limited in where they can be worn. I might wear them once a year, but do I keep them (when they take up valuable space) or bin/ebay them and replace with something more versatile?

Cazs, I am the exact opposite, tonnes of work clothes and next to nothing to wear thats casual or weekend.

Seasonal didn't work as a system btw, I don't have enough to make a capsule for each season - and buying more seemed to be missing the point. Though I can follow Minervas example and just store the obvious summer / winter stuff out of season. Will still need to thin things down though.

I can't seem to throw anything out without a plan first, eveything gets a 'what if' treatment and goes back in! Sigh. I dispair of myself too!

I'm trying to do so just now... Clearing out what is worn out and done. Then I have bought some black white & grey vests and t- shirts from Primark. Long sleeved, 3/4 sleeved and short sleeved.. Then I can use them with some of the clothes I have.i have bought a few items in sale- couple of cardigans and a couple of ballet pumps for summer. I plan to buy some new scarfs and couple of different( hopefully inexpensive) accessories to mix n match a bit to create different 'looks' cheaper...

This is what I need to do! Simple basics that I can work with.

I believe that if you have nothing to wear it is often because your wardrobe is too full, not full enough.

    So very true!

  • The last time I did a proper re-style was in April 2010. I got married in May 2010, and after living for 4 years on the west coast of Ireland (it really does rain all the time...) I realised that I quite literally had nothing to wear for the honeymoon.

Took myself off to the personal shopper at Debenhams - it was brilliant, and great fun. She had a range of possible outfits (not just items of clothing) ready for me to try on when I arrived, and then based on what I liked and what fitted, she went looking for more. And she always came back with a necklace, or a bag, or a pair of shoes that would go with whatever had caught my eye. I'd budgeted about £200 and I felt under no pressure to buy at all. And if you change your mind when you get home (as I did with a jacket) you can take it back just like any other purchase.

She bounced me out of my comfort zone (jeans, joggers, sweatshirt), and got me in to skinny jeans, beaded tops and even a silk dress. I tried on stuff I would never have picked up off the rail myself, and although I certainly didn't buy it all, I enjoyed trying it all on.

Come to think of it, that was nearly 4 years ago - I should probably do it again sometime soon...

  • I update every season, hair and make up too, it doesnt cost much just tweaking and maybe a few basics and fashionable bits bought new. I mix designer and high street but virtualy everying is bought with some form of discount or sale. I like to have a lot of clothes and choice and dont want a capsule wardrobe. Each season I find a celeb who is roughly the same size as me and has a style I like and take influence from them and make it my own style, good luck :)
  • After clear out no 1 at the beginning of the year where I got rid of things that were really 'worn' I'm now looking at things that I don't wear or don't suit me or haven't worn in aaggess! We just received an email at work of a women's charity looking for donations so I may give my wardrobe another going over and give some items to there.

I'm trying not to 'cull' so to speak but more clear out what doesn't suit/fit/make me feel good and very slowly replace it with items I love. It will take a while but hopefully I can build a more suited/ better quality wardrobe. In the mean time I have enough to do me in my wardrobe and enough to mix and match.

Interesting thought about the personal shopper it's something I've never done but would be interested to try, might look at doing it after my birthday to explore different things that may suit me and I think it's easy to become blind to other styles when your are out shopping as you hone in on styles that you wear..
