Some people just do not get it, when the OP says they do not have the money, they do not mean they can't really afford it, they mean if they pay £20 on travel, they don't eat, it's as simple as that.

Is it not worth going hungry, though, for a chance to get back into work?

What sorry? No! They're hardly going to make the best impression at work looking vacant and feeling faint so I doubt they'd get the job anyways under those circumstances...

At any rate, why would this firm hire a paid worker if they can get people doing work for free for 2 months at a time!?

Really? For 8 weeks? Is that what this country has come to?

If they are not even prepared to discuss expenses do you honestly think there is a job at the end? Or just another mug waiting to pay to work on the off chance there may be a real job at the end?

I'm a business owner and would have no problem employing a young person without work experience to be honest.

for 8 weeks, at a charity, no it's not, first i do not think there is a choice here to make, 8 week of paying £20 out of £71 even before any other bill is paid would be impossible for most people, and are you really suggesting that a charity that hires free workers, is going to have a light bulb moment and think why don't we pay them ;)

the op will stand just as much chance walking around their local shopping centre handing out flyer begging people for a job, but at least that won't cost them £20 a week.

The transport costs that have been quoted on this thread suggest the OP is not in a city.

If so, surely rent should cost less than £500 a month, particularly just for a room.

how much credit would you give to someone that came to you for a job that said they were made to go to work at a charity shop for 8 weeks for free or their benefit would stop, as apposed to someone coming to you that hadn't?

I think the government think the employers are daft, most know what a charity shop on a CV probably means, if they are unsure I bet most would probably ask, I know at my last interview the interviewer asked me if this was a forced interview from the dole, he soon realised it wasn't as I got the job.

why how much do you think a weekly ticket in a big city is? still around £15 if you are luckly. so still unaffordable...and lets remember here, the charity is getting for labour for 8 weeks, the least they could do is pay the bus fare.

The person that did do the charity shop work would prove that theyre capable of working hard... if someone hadn't then I wouldn't take any offence because working for nothing for 8 weeks is a disgraceful scheme by the government. The main thing I would look for is decent school grades

In any case, the OP has talked about walking to the next town, so they are not in a city and rent shouldn't be so much of an issue, thus freeing up money.

It's all very well to say 'this shouldn't happen' but it is and I want to give the OP a practical solution.
