  • plus your electric and gas bill will go down quite a bit for all the hours you are out the house. How far roughly is it away? As I often to a 3 mile round trip walking it to work as bus fares about the same as what you are saying and its doable walking

My bills won't go down as I don't have the heating on during the day no matter how cold it is.

It's about 6 miles away so too far to walk. I can walk into town which is about 2 miles although it can be a bit of a struggle as I have some problems with walking.

To go back to the original post, I'd estimate that yes, you are likely to be, and that it's probably fair if you are, in my opinion.

You may be lucky, though, and get away with it.

I have asked at the Job Centre today and they said no I won't be sanctioned as it is my choice whether I do work experience or not.

I phoned the employer and they definitely will not help with fares - the woman sounded annoyed that I asked. So they want someone to work for not a penny for 8 weeks and are not even prepared to help with fares. What a country we live in now.

glad it worked out for you.

Was it a national charity? if so, name and shame them, as not even offering bus fare is shocking.
  • Slave Labour, next these rotten companies will want jobseekers to pay them for the pleasure of working for them.
I'd tell them to sick it where the sun dont shine.

OP as been mentioned go along to the interview, you dont have a crystal ball so cant predict what will happen in the interview, they might not even offer you the placement.

I don't get how it'd be £20 per week, is there no bus pass or that you could get? Just seems an awful lot for a 6 mile journey.

Around here its 1.80 for about a mile away. It does depend where you are in the country but bus fares are crazy, especially when compared to taxi fares as around here if there are 2 or more its often cheaper to get a taxi each way than it is to go on the bus. 6 miles is a long way to walk though and when volunteering it is bad on them to not offer to pay the bus fare especially as they would normally have to pay someone to do the work if it is needed to be done.

  • Where I live a peak bus ticket( which can be used before 9.30) is either £4.50 or £5.00.Per day. So £20.00 per week is about right I think.

I don't know where the OP lives but have looked at Arriva flexi ticket for Leicester. The day ticket can be bought for £4.20 (ie about the daily sum from the OP's £20/week).

However they sell 4-week tickets for £46.80 if bought online (so £11.70/week) discounted from £52.

Something to research for the future.

in my area a 3 mile trip is over £2 one way, a weekly pass is £15 a week, so I can believe in some areas it's £20, with all the OAP's getting free travel, it's down to the rest of us to pay more, it's nearly cheaper to get a taxi some places now.

In the TFL area all kids travel for free on the buses and paying customers sometimes can not even get on the bus to get to work. Plus people with pushchairs and prams taking up spaces for free.
