Not true. It's an Allowance to Job Seek. Its just that most of us end up using it to pay things like heating and food as well. But that's not what its intended for.
Sorry the letters you get say this is the amount you need to live on. You never get a letter saying this is to look for work with.

If its not intended for living ie light and food and rent etc then how do you pay these things?

Can't seek many jobs if you don't spend some of your JSA on fares can you?

If you are in that position it depends how far you are prepared to walk ;)

The point is £71 per week isn't enough to live on let alone spend on bus fares. Take out the bare essentials - gas, water, electric, food (am I permitted a t.v license? ) - and there's nothing left.

There are other benefits available in parallel - e.g. Housing Benefit / LHA to cover rent, Council Tax Reductions etc

And they are people who do not qualify for those as they may be renting a room in a house owned by a family member.

i wouldnt hold out for that 'managers position' with your attitude.
20quid fares, 60quid benefits, can you do maths?

If it were for 1 or 2 weeks I might manage to find the fares but over 8 weeks I cannot afford to pay out £180.

How am I meant to pay for gas, electric, water, tv licence, phone (need for looking for work), broadband (need for looking for work), food? My gas, electric and water alone are over £40 a week.

I get housing benefit and council tax benefit, neither of which cover all my rent and council tax so that has to come out of my JSA as well. The housing benefit is ridiculously low. I get £500 a month and you can't even get a bedsit for that. I have to find £33 a month for my council tax.

So when I say I can't afford £20 a week for fares I mean it.
