Closing Aqua Credit Card - Cash back question, please.

Up to now I had no trouble with AQUA who credited me £100 last summer and nearly £100 on planned closure by them of the account on 22 January 2014. I did not take up the renewal offer. I received my cheque (HSBC cheque) yesterday BUT it was rejected by my bank this morning on the ground that the cheque number is invalid! My bank said they had more instances of this problem with AQUA cheques this week. I have used their secure message system to complain - watch this space.
You know, your post that says HSBC bounced your cheque on a Saturday would probably have received more credence if it weren't for the fact you last posted over 3 years ago, and only have 4 posts to your name. :cool:0 -

1. What has number of posts got to do with anything? There will be hundreds/thousands of people who don't use the forum at all with the same problems.
2. I've used HSBC on a Saturday many times.0 -

The counter may be open, but the background banking still only essentially operates Monday-Friday.0 -

Counter staff could still reject and invalid cheque though couldn't they (not the same as bouncing I agree).0 -
Have you ever had HSBC bounce a cheque on you before on a Saturday?

No, but I've had cash paid in and be available immediately. And the poster didn't say the cheque had bounced, just that it was rejected. Perhaps if HSBC had had problems with aqua cheques they would be on the look out for others arriving?0 -

No it doesn't. It says ...I received my cheque (HSBC cheque) yesterday BUT it was rejected by my bank this morning on the ground that the cheque number is invalid!
Rejected not bounced.
You pay a cheque in and the counter staff run it through their optical reader which captures the sort code account number and cheque number. No doubt the computer system checks these before allowing the transaction.0 -

Rejected? Bounced? Same difference in my book.
How can a cheque number be wrong? (in the sense it can be detected on presentation)
Perhaps it has letters in it, eh?
Strange that no one else who received cheques last month noticed anything odd about the cheque numbers (like have letters in it) or reported them not being accepted by their bank.
Edit: Just seen elsewhere the account number appears to be 02063581.
I don't see anything immediately wrong with that as an account number, and I doubt any Saturday teller would either, nor their electronic reading equipment.
As for the optical reader checking/authorising the transaction before it goes ahead ... :rotfl:- it just reads the numbers0 -

This one reckons the 02063581 account is valid and the 00263581 is invalid.0 -

It won't be the optical reader that checks the number, it will be the computer it is plugged into. At the very least the account number will have a built in checksum digit.0 -
Account numbers can be validated. It should not be beyond HSBC to determine that the HSBC account number the cheque draws on is invalid at the point it is scanned. There are free web services that do so...

So you've both missed the inconsitency in my earlier post (which admitedly I did too)
The poster in this thread referred to an incorrect cheque number
The other thread refers to an inconsistent account number (although those who can say for certain say it is the 8 digit number). But a 7 digit number (i.e. missing a leading zero) should equally be acceptable.
Of course if anyone really also had a cheque with a 6 digit account number (i.e. with both the leading zero and the zero between the 2 and the 6 missing) that would cause the cheque to bounce. (but probably not rejected by the staff at paying in time - if a 7 digit account number is accepted, then probably a 6 digit one would be too)0
