Honeymoons - wheres yours to be?

Where's everyone going for their honeymoon?

OH doesn't like flying, so it's either a UK honeymoon, or somewhere within a reasonable driving distance in France. Anywhere else in Europe (if we used Eurostar) seems forever and day in the car otherwise and don't really fancy it being over 4 hours so it limits our options, so was thinking of Edinburgh as there are some nice Lochs you can stay near, and you can go dolphin watching too which I thought might be nice.

Wondered what everyone else is doing for theirs.

We've just booked to go to New York in November/December even though we are getting married in April :)

The south of France is lovely, I've never been to Scotland so can't really help there but the Lake District is really nice some nice areas there.

  • How about road trip in Wales? Some lovely areas to visit! Tenby, Llandudno, Snowdon.

We're going to Santorini for 2 weeks for our honeymoon, but we're going about 9 weeks after our wedding day as it'll be better weather and we can fly direct there from the UK then.

My partner wants to go to New York for ours but unless we find a really good deal I doubt we can afford it. Personally I'd rather go somewhere cheap in Europe so we can splash out a bit and still not go over budget.

You'll enjoy Edinburgh. I went years ago and would love to go back. There's loads to do.

We're going the 29th November till the 6th December flying from Manchester to Newark the flights are £1500 flying out economy but flying back premium economy, the hotel is a Marriott on fifth avenue and that is £1400 so £2900 for a week in New York for two flying with BA.

Eek, yes, we definitely won't be able to afford it- that's over half our wedding budget! Will have to have yet another chat with my partner and try and make him realise it's just not happening.

We're planning to go to New York in late November (our wedding is 1st November). Virgin Holidays sale looks to have some decent deals - still not cheap mind but you can do it for about £1000 each - or alternatively we might look for our own hotel as there are a couple we like the sound of.

If we were staying in the UK I'd definitely go to Edinburgh though - it's somewhere I'd really love to visit, especially as there's loads of interesting history and good places to eat.

ETA a couple of other ideas:

If you don't mind getting a train rather than driving, how would you feel about Paris?

Or what about Cornwall? You do need the weather to go in your favour a bit but depending which bit you go to there are lots of cosy little cottages on the coast and quite a few day trips you can do depending where you are. I'd recommend somewhere like St Ives as a base as it's pretty easy to get to the big stuff but depending what you're into there's plenty to do in most areas of the county.

How about a cruise? Took my kids on one last year as wanted to get to the sun but hate flying, so got on one from Southampton to Spain. If too expensive, could do a 2 or 3 days one to France?
  • I know it sounds daft, but I've been off the idea of cruises ever since Titanic lol.

I've always wanted to go to somewhere warm and exotic, so trying to keep something that's a bit of a 50/ 50 compromise by looking at France as its warm and within driving distance. It'll have the sun and a pool for me, and no planes for him.

Edinburgh looks fab though and could have some nice memories for us, but I can't help feeling a wee bit embarrassed by telling people we might be honeymooning in the UK, I guess that's me just being a bit proud though. I've already had someone sneer at my wedding dress choice when I showed them a picture, which made me feel awful, and they keep asking what I'm doing for my honeymoon, and I just know they'll have something thoughtless to say about that too (not quite sure why I still talk to them really).

I know they're just being thoughtless, but part of me wants to shove a picture of a nice white beach, surrounded by palm trees and blue seas under their nose and rub their face in it.

I'm sure other people aren't thinking the same thing when I talk about honeymoons with them, but there are a couple of other people getting married this year at work too, and everything their doing is exactly what I dreamed of for my honeymoon, but relationships are all about a compromise, and so we can't go somewhere exotic unfortunately.

Stuff 'em. Your wedding, your dress (which I'm sure is gorgeous), your honeymoon. Do whatever the heck you want. And anyway, honeymoons in the UK are trendy now!

I personally would get the photo of the beach, stick it under the nose and then not tell them where you're actually going. Plus I'm pretty sure there are a couple of places in Cornwall with palm trees so you could always say that's where you went...

  • We are hoping to book a twin centre for New York and Las Vegas. We aren't getting married until next year so have a bit of time for saving.

Edinburgh is gorgeous... And I am bias as I live here! Feel free to ask anything.
You could look at Newcastle for a night and then get the ferry to Amsterdam? Cuts out all the flying.

Also used to be in travel, so if anyone has any questions re honeymoons, feel free to ask.
