No-one gets paid for driving to work, not even in local government. If a job on your way to work means an extra 3½ miles, then 3½ miles is what you should be paid. Any more is profit for you, and a loss to me, the Council Tax payer.

40p/mile is close to the maximum allowable under HMRC rules. You're doing well already.

Correction. Members of Parliament are allowed to claim for driving to work. But there again, they make the rules.

Travel to and from work is not a deductible tax expense for anyone.

"In my opinion I should be able to claim 7 miles first job to office"

In which case every office worker would be able to claim for travel to work, they can't. Why should you be treated differently?

Would that stop the MPs claiming?

Mileage to and from your normal place of work is not a valid business expense and you wont be able to claim any tax allowance as such. As far as MPs are concerned it'll depend on where and what they class as their normal place of work.
  • I get 46p a mile...

  • I think alot of you have got the wrong end of the stick. I never expect to be paid to drive to or from work!

Then if you want to get the extra mileage payment, you need to drive to the office before you go to the site.

    Otherwise:
You normally have a 7 mile journey to work from home. You can't claim mileage for that.
If the site was 4 miles from the office and you went there after you arrived at the office, then you could claim the 4 miles, correct?
If the site is 4 miles from your home in the opposite direction to the office, then you can claim the 4 miles, but not the 7 miles that you then drive to get to work, because if you weren't going to the site, you'd still have to drive those 7 miles to work.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Eh.. Then what was the point in your original post then ? You said it wasn't fair that you had to deduct your commute to work, is that not the same thing?

If the journey is in totally the opposite direction then it seems unfair that the distance to/from the normal place of employment is deducted but its pretty standard. If you were not going to another site you would drive the normal distance anyway, anything above that is then the additional mileage and claimable.

Think yourself lucky you get that much, I only get 25p a mile :(
