upgrading SKY+ box

Hi

Ive currently got an old style (white) sky+ box on a sky package. I cant get 'anytime' because of the old style box, and sky want £199 for an HD box.

Question - can I buy a newer style sky+ box second hand and simply replace it, or is it not that easy?

Im not averse to ringing them, Im just trying to understand my options before I have to do it!

thanks

Yes you can buy your own and install it. Then just get Sky to pair it to the viewing card.

Yes, the only problem is that you'll have no guarantee for the goods and Sky won't want to know if it later becomes faulty.

But as you'll only pay £30 or so (as opposed to the quoted £199), I know what I'd do.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Indeed, especially as the Sky warranty would only be one year anyway.
You could of course ask to cancel and try to blag an upgraded box as part of a retention deal?

This is probably the best thing to do. given you've got an old style box, must mean you're well out of contract by now, and probabley overpaying anyways. Always a good idea to at least say you're going to leave when your contract runs out, you'll get half price deals thrown at you from all angles, plus maybe a new box if you push it.
  • I would just ring to cancel , tell them you are going to virgin media as you can get a new tivo box installed for free . They will probably offer you a new box for free , or £29 or £49 are prices they like using . I have just got two new boxes for £29 , and a price reduction, so just play hardball with them , say you are cancelling though so they take you seriously.
  • thanks everyone - I'll give them a ring to see what they will offer before buying a new box!

In the same position myself (except I'm out in the boonies, so no Virgin stick to beat them with). How'd it go?
  • I have just taken up Entertainment Extra + upgrade to get a free HD box upgrade. Our Sky plus box is on its way out.

It costs an extra £5.25 a month but hopefully get Topcashback of £52 and £25 M and S voucher.
