March 2014 Grocery Challenge

  • Thanks for the welcome and tips on signature updates! £36 to add, fresh fruit and veg (including a huge potato sack!) mostly plus organic fruit yogurt and organic milk. I know it's more expensive but we eat so much of it (the milk is made into yogurt mainly!) and I worry about hormones in milk. Hoping I won't have to venture into the shops for at least a week.... I'll have to stay out or I'll never stick within my budget!!!!off to look up potato recipes. The boys have only recently decided they like them....

Anyone know much about cutting up a fresh chicken to freeze?
Can I freeze it on the bone raw?
No idea at all about chopping it up before freezing (I know it can be done, but not how - though I believe there are videos on-line), but they're fine to be frozen as a whole raw chicken (if you have the space).

    Hi all,
I found the February challenge a few weeks ago and have read it all the way through! It was long!
Can I sign up for march (calendar month) for £250
There are two adults, 2 children (2 and5) and two cats. This will include everything that we buy from a supermarket. Food, toiletries, nappies, cat food etc.
I think we usually spend about £60 a week. We have cut our weekly shop down from £90 by shopping mainly in aldi, meal planning and batch cooking!
£250 should be manageable as we have quite a full freezer and bought a lot of toiletries and cleaning products last month. I will look through the freezer and cupboards and do my meal plan for the next few weeks!

  • Hello all, have got quite a bit of reading to do this evening catching up with posts on here and Feb.

Could you please include me for £250 again this month, went over in Feb but this was due to a big stock up shop which will cover March as well so hoping not to have to get too much more other than normal bread milk and fruit.

    Thanks everyone

  • Got the Aldi voucher in the newspaper today so went there today to try and stock up on things for the month - spent £45.83, which will kick off the month of March. Got a lot of tinned food, I've been going through an awful lot of tinned tomatoes lately!

Have just sat down and made a list of all the 'main meal' stuff we have, and am going to meal plan from that today. Theoretically, I've just counted up the basis of 28 meals from what I already have, but I'm sure I'll find excuses to go shopping and buy more. Fingers crossed I can meal plan and stick to it!!

I breast fed so can't help with bottles but - on a bus the other day - couple made a bottle using hot water from a flask. I was amazed.

That sounds really sensible actually. I take a flask to work and it can stay hot for hours. Sounds like less messing than having to warm a bottle up and it keeps sterilefor that bit longer.
