Converting bathroom into 4th bedroom.... Madness?

we are a family of 5 living in a average sized 3 bed semi. 3 under 4 yrs and myself and DH. The house is relatively new , has a downstairs loo , a en suite to master and a family bathroom. We would love to move to a bigger house , however, we are close to school family and are v settled. Attic conversion isn't doable and I have thought about changing the bathroom into a bedroom, if we pinch some space from a v large landing it would be 6ft by 11ft long. The ensuite could be converted to master if we move the door. Does this sound like madness?the bathroom is seldom used.... I am hoping it won't be too expensive... Happy to decorate but will need a new window and bathroom suite safely removed. Also need a new radiator as current one is small. Any advice gratefully received:)

  • Sounds like madness and may make your home hard to sell. But that's up to you.

It's hard to say without knowing the layout of your house, but I do think it sounds a bit mad.

Sounds like madness to me. A 3-bed and three under-4s. That reads to me as "3 in the 2nd bedroom and box-room still empty". You don't need another bedroom probably for 10 years or so. Eldest can go into the box room when they move up to big school, aged 11.... leaving two to share the 2nd bedroom.

The bathroom might not be used much now, but would this change once your children get older?

If you're going to be staying in the house a long time, I would say alter it to suit your family's needs. If you think you might move in a few years, I would say do your research on houses in your area with three bed 2 baths v 4 bed 1 bath.

As a member of an 8 person household growing up in a three bed semi with one bathroom and a separate loo I would say keep the bathroom, that was the real pinch point when we all had to get ready at once.

A relative had 5 kids in a small 3 bedroom terrace. One bathroom, no separate loo. All the kids stayed at home till they left to move in with partners. There were more arguments over the bathroom facilities than there ever were over sharing a room.

That may also put off buyers.

That's because the children are small. When they are a little bit older, having two bathrooms is going to be a boon!
  • Thanks for your input I have thought about future problems with only one bathroom .... A shower downstairs is doable but not needed at the moment.. All the kids in one room is leading to sleepless nights for all that's why we are keen to get them into a room each. We have no plans to move as we are close to schools and colleges. I'm not worried about resale we would most likely switch back to resale if need be.
