Thanks folks for help. I have asked this same question on facebook and apparently freeview not a viable option in this area as our transmitter is a lite one and even with a booster it's not so great.

My brother is going to sort me out with a sky installation.

If the idea is to save money (which it presumably is if you're on this forum), then why go for Sky rather then Freesat?

I have haggled with Virgin and got upgraded and reduced payments by £30 per month so I am very happy with that. Thanks again folks. Help much appreciated.

Even better, after discussing with kids ( teenagers) they will pay their own costs so I am in real terms only paying £10 per month for my portion of television costs.

Freesat apparently isn't so good for us as we are surrounded by lots of trees and the satellite dishes have problems getting a signal. This is the same for freeview although we could get that with digital aerials and boosters but very limited channels ( due to lite transmitter) and no record facility. We all love our telly and internet so I reckon in the end I got the best option for us

No such thing as a digital aerial so don't ever let anyone try to sell you one.

When we cancelled VM last month, they let us keep the Tivo box
It gets a good few basic channels so I stuck it in my workshop for when I'm hiding

How does that work? Do they not stop all feeds to the cable or do they just allow some to continue?

dunno how it works but when I threatened to leave today they said I could keep 1 box and it would become a freeview box.

Well it can't become a freeview box as that is delivered through an aerial and VM though a cable so still unclear as to what's happening here.
