Can a Three sim be used only in a Three mobile?

  • As others above have said any unlocked 3G enabled mobile can be used with a Network Three sim card.

Network Three uses only 3G for it's own transmitters (that's why it's called Three) and the 2G fall back that was previously provided by Orange is gradually being reduced so that all customers will have access to only 3G transmitters - this process has been going on since 2010.

Eventually it looks like 2G is doomed as the networks can roll out more 3G signals on the old 2G frequencies. O2 and Vodafone already do this with their 3G900 UMTS services so the space for 2G is already being reduced.

    I think you are mistaken.
Firstly, data can be transmitted via 2g, although slowly.
Secondly, normally 3g and mobile data can be switched on/off independently.
Yes, I believe this changing icon is for data connection only. It simply disappears if the data is turned off, even on 3g.

I was told by an expert on another website that when you turn off mobile data, you are not turning off 3G signal altogether. After all, this explains why me and that other poster can call and text no problem with the mobile data off. I was able to do it in London too and other locations so it is not 2G fall back.
As I said I had this doubt myself.
I didn't question that data can be transmitted via 2G... not on 3, though. I used to have an LG KS360 and that was 2G only and was capable of using data anyway.
You said it yourself anyway, when you turn off mobile data, you don't get the icon anymore saying 3G or whatever but you still have a 3G signal.

EDIT to add that recently I had problems with the 3G signal not being available and I certainly couldn't rely on a 2G fall back here, as I was unable to text or call without a functioning 3G signal. I can say for sure where I live there is no 2G fall back. This sort of proves the theory above.

My apologies. I seem to have misunderstood your previous post.
What you say makes perfect sense.
