My Three/3 mobile is faulty but the SIM is fine - I can only use it in a new Three mobile or unlocked Mobile or SIM free one? Just to clarify, thanks.

Any unlocked phone - it should work with.
Just has to be the right shape - normal sim, micro or nano to suit the phone.
Only other thing is if you want to use data, you need to use 3G capable phone.

I always thought unlocked phones didn't work with 3 sims.

Or was that just before 3G became the norm ?

Long time ago, I had 3 phone - got 3 to unlock it and it continued to work with the 3 sim and with other networks (after the unlock) - I can't see why an unlocked phone would not work other than it was not 3G enabled - or some condition imposed by 3 to register it with them but that should be easy.

You need a 3g capable phone even for calls/texts only.

Oh - had a suspicion that would be the case - long time since i was on 3 network. Remember all the hassle I had to get an lg phone unlocked by 3. Ah the memories of calling 3

This is probably because in some areas with weak 3g signal they provide 2g roaming (on O?).

No, when you supposedly turn off the 3G on the phone, you turn off just the data bit, not the actual 3G signal. This unless you set the phone to 2G only, but I think poster meant that you don't see the 3G or H symbol displayed on the phone because the data connection is disabled.
The phone has to be capable of 3G to support a 3 sim, though.
One of my phones on 3 has no data enabled (3G) and I can call and text no problem.
I wondered why I could still text and call even if I was persuaded 3G signal was off, but someone explained to me what I outlined above.

3 no longer use any 2G infrastructure so all phones must be 3G

    I think you are mistaken.
Firstly, data can be transmitted via 2g, although slowly.
Secondly, normally 3g and mobile data can be switched on/off independently.
This unless you set the phone to 2G only, but I think poster meant that you don't see the 3G or H symbol displayed on the phone because the data connection is disabled.
Yes, I believe this changing icon is for data connection only. It simply disappears if the data is turned off, even on 3g.
