I see this sort of thing happening with more and more software being incompatible with other stuff - for example, had a minor blip over xmas with Mini-Gun #2's new pc, the wifi adapter and Call Of Duty:Ghosts. Something in CoD was affecting the adapter driver and causing BSOD. Swapped to different wifi adapter = happy young 'un :)

This does seem to happen more with AV progs than other stuff in the main....

Upgraded 3 machines, 1x Win7 and 2x XP, all rebooted and installed fine and appear problem (ish) free.

Strangely one of the XP's rebooted and I didn't have the 'Install Chrome' page, but just booted right through.

I've never had Chrome or Google Toolbar on anything.

The only thing not working, I thought I'd back up my customised settings, this refuses to work in Win 7 64-bit. (Suspect I have to run Avast with Admin rights, as error message says 'Access denied')
    Move along, nothing to see.

spud, one of the recent issues is with avast's self-protection module, try turning it off temporarily to save your settings then back on...

open avast interface, go to Settings > Troubleshooting and untick the self-protect module :)

Tried that, still " Error while exporting settings. Access denied." :)

  • After further digging it seems that avast 2014 is not getting along with older versions of XP, which my lap top has.

aww shoot... chalk up another nail in the coffin of decent, simple compatable av progs :(

did you reboot after turning it off? Can make a difference...

    Just tried reboot, same result.
Also tried in Safe Mode, got 'The AAVM subsystem detected an RPC error. Access is denied'.

I've Googled this and found posts going back 10yrs, possibly error is red herring, due to service not running properly in safe mode.

Gave up on Avira after it's tie up with that registry cleaner lot.

Now Avast seems to be trying to catch you out with with it's always changing options, not to mention Chrome and Google toolbar.

I've also found it's often reversing some of my customisations.:)

the other alternative is to go back to v8.x but it looks like the installer has been pulled from filehippo's repository and all "previous version" links give the latest 9.x installer :(
