Avast updates seem to cause me problems on one or both devices every other time.
I really am tired of it but already ditched AVG for being too bloated so not sure what i'd try next.

Avast free (2014.9.0.2008) user here (on several PCs, Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1) - no problems on any of them.

Bod yours is slightly outdated, the latest version is 2014.9.0.2011 - however I am having no issues with it.

OP what exactly was wrong with Avast? I have just switched from AVG and it works much better for me.

I guess the latest update hasn't rolled through to me yet. Just done an Update check and the new version is there - installing now. :)

?you could try paying for one like Norton or Kaspersky?
Then you spend less time sorting problems out the free ones give.
All depends on how you value your time I suppose

You can't be sure about that. Just because you paid for something, does not mean it is trouble free. Just because you paid for a product does not automatically give you free support either.

I would go the other way and say with extra features and more complexity, it potentially will be more troublesome.

since ver 9.xxx it's been a pain, esp the driver element of it, causing XP to crash :( no probs on W7 though (yet ;) )

updated all three a few days ago, 2 xp's and a W7. No problems here.
    Suggest checking for embedded rootkits..

I just updated to the latest Avast too and no problems yet (on Win 7).

What do you mean by 'locked out'?

Starts with a cannot find file(avast file) then a blue screen we are closing windows to stop damage etc. Tried 3/4 times then did a save mode removed avast installed avg will use this until avast has settled down.
