WOAD I'm not sure from your post whether your little one rolls over and over by himself but this made a big difference to my lo's tummy time. We used to place him down on his tummy and he'd instantly roll onto his back. Now he can roll the length of a room he chooses to be on his tummy quite a lot.
He doesn't crawl yet but he's starting to paddle his legs like a frog and lift his bum. He likes to walk with us holding his arms bes too. He cries if we stop but it's back breaking!

Regards the blw your son sounds very much like mine. He'll take food from a spoon if it's sweet/porridge or cheesy?! everything else is finger food though. To be honest I was content weaning my lo using the older approach of purees plus finger food. When lo stopped allowing this I never read up on blw I just gave him things to eat with his hands. so what I'm saying is they don't really need to be clued up on it in my opinion. I give my lo sandwiches/cheese on toast/pasta tubes with sauce and tuna/jacket potato/potato wedges/roasted veg like carrots/sweetcorn and courgette fritters etc at lunch. none of it is difficult to make and it's basically just finger food as crabapple says.

Then I finish lunch with either some fruit to hold or a yoghurt/fruit pot/rice pudding or pureed fruit. I don't know much about blw but I've found this way fine as he can also put a loaded spoon to his own mouth. Don't know if this helps but at meal times I give him his own spoon and then I have one. I give him most of the food but periodically load his spoon too and sometimes he'll eat better this way.

I try to keep to 3 meals a day but if he's fussy I'll just give milk and not feel bad about it.

Benice - slings going back tomorrow. I like the look of the connecta but I don't have time to stay tomorrow so I think I'll just Bob it back and go again another day. Going to try and be early and if I'm first ish there I might hire another one. I found the ring sling ok but I'd definitely need showing again. I've realised that I want something fsst fast fast to give support when I need to carry him into a shop or something. If it's not quick I just don't use it!

forgot to say I got all my policies and procedures throughfrom nursery. mine give tea - lasagne/shepherds pie etc. Have to say I like that my mammoth fees cover food as it'll be lovely not having to go through the mess 3 times a day!

They had some funny polices though - like one on alcohol and substance abuse in parents. It's a bit sad that something like that is obviously needed.

They also go on day trips each month but I found myself thinking I'd find that harder than knowing he was at nursery in surroundings I know about! I know that's probably over the top!

Enjoying the weaning talk. We'll be starting in two months... I put some sliced banana in the freezer yesterday to see what frozen nana would be like and it's scrummy, I'll eat it if he doesn't! I can imagine we'll do a mix of blw and pur!es but see what suits us once we start. Already suspect mother in law will hate blw as I remember her complaining several times about a family friend's baby who was feeding herself at a get together and making a real mess rather than being spoon fed. Oh well!

Having a quiet week after a busy one last week. Also it's hubby's bday on Father's Day so I've got some bits to buy and a flat to keep tidy for visitors!

Been getting annoyed by my baby book this week (what to expect 1st year) and might give up on reading again and trust my instinct. The author has never met my baby after all. I feel like the more I read the more I doubt myself and my baby just doesn't fit the average on certain things (eg bedtime - last night midnight but usually 10-11pm).

Have a good week all x

  • BeNice thanks, although lo enjoys food when he has it he isn't at the asking for it stage yet but I'm sure he'll let me know soon enough. I've got a bumbo and tray I suppose I could send with him, the tray doesn't contain the food very well though. I've got a doidy cup but lo hasn't got the hang of it, he either licks the water or takes it in his mouth then let's it fall out!

MrsH thanks, think I just wanted a bit of reassurance that it's ok for lo to fall. I've tried showing him how to move his legs when changing position but he doesn't care. Family have seen lo eating but I think they will be anxious as I won't be there and also he is very very messy which they aren't keen on, even with low mess foods he needs a full change of clothes!

Nutella I was going to get a travel booster seat but when we visit family lo always ends up on my knee as there aren't enough chairs for him to have his own but I do have a bumbo I could send. I've also got floor mats etc as he does love to make a mess. I would send snacks etc with him but wouldn't be able to send a 'proper meal' as he usually just has bits of our food. Good idea with the milk in a silly cup, I'll give it a try, he just doesn't seem to understand a cup is for drinking not to eat.

Crabapple Lo likes to use spoons as catapults so I haven't braved loaded spoons yet, I've tried a spoon lightly coated in yoghurt but he turns the spoon around and chews on the handle instead. That's not very nice about the baby group :( lo is mostly the eldest in the groups we go to and so is usually the one yelling because he wants to move but can't yet! But the groups are all lovely and say they're happy for babies to do what they want which is a bit of a relief. I think lo is still a bit young for crawling and I never crawled so maybe he'll follow me.

Bangton no lo can only flip from belly to back and isn't properly rolling yet, the few times he's tried back to belly he gets his arms stuck. His latest favourite trick is to sit on the floor and pick up all the bits off the floor :( he spots the smallest bit of fluff from miles away and reaches to pick it up, I do hoover but I don't know where they come from!! Yes yes to the back breaking walking, I've tried propping him up against the edge of the sofa but he can't hold on long enough so just whinges again.

Our boys do sound very similar, I haven't tried sandwiches or pasta yet as I'm a bit worried about his tendency to swallow stuff after minimal chewing or to keep shoving food in even with mouth already full. I don't like cooking but I'm going to start trying to make more things for him and maybe try and freeze some bits etc. I'm quite looking forward to him being fed by the childminder as it's less mess for me. He'll still need at least one meal at home tho. I can understand your worry about day trips, I'd be the same especially as lo is far too nosy to sleep when out and about.

Fran yes some people can't believe I let lo get messy and I've had comments that I'm cruel for forcing him to feed himself!! I haven't got any baby books but I do spend time on the internet and find its full of things that make me think lo is 'behind' so I just ignore it now, especially after seeing similar aged babies at baby groups who aren't doing those things either.

woad.. yep the little bits of fluff happens here too. We have wooden floors with a big rug in the middle and he just pulls at it till threads come out. He's worse at my mums as her rug is really fluffy and he likes to tear bits out and try to eat it. He's the same with grass when we're outside.

fran - baby guide books!! I hate them. I used to Google and read everything until I realised it was making me question myself. Now the only advice I'm interested in is that of mums who are going through it or have done recently. my oh read a book that said babies could be trained to sleep 12hrs but mine has never once slept that long at night! 9 is more normal here!!

Basically it's often a lot of Bull!

The problem with all the books is that babies can't read. They will just carry on doing whatever they want!

Sorry have been offline for the last while, my phone broke and back to work and life is been busy busy! I have to share this somewhere so

C took his first step today, he is almost 10 months. My MIl has been quiet ill and is in the final stages of life so go I tell dh or leave it and the next time he does it pretend like it's the first time?
  • lao_cat I'm really not sure for you. If it was my OH, I would tell him because he would know that I'm not telling the truth. Sorry to hear about your MIL.

My HV always says that babies don't read the books, he's a baby. As long as he's happy and healthy he's fine. My mate who's a qualified MW, says that as long as they're walking by 18 months there's no need to worry. I figure that they have so many skills to learn that they just master different skills at different times.

What do you use to freeze food in? I'm finding it hard to find large plastic containers that are BPA free to freeze meals in. I'm hoping to fill the freezer with healthy meals for bubs and us. The only thing I can thing of are foil containers that are like takeaway containers.

Ikea sell BPA free plastic containers, although must admit I just use 'normal' ones from the poundshop... Personally not keen on foil as you can't put them in the microwave :o
  • Hi all. I never seem to have the time to post on here, it's hetic at the moment. Hubby started a new job last Saturday (lorry driving) so :j that finally after 11 mths in a minimum wage job he's now earning a hell of a lot more and also good timing in that I've just gone back to work part time.

However we've had no time for him to get his own car. So myself and lo have been up and out for 5:30 am to take him to work (40 min round trip) to then come home and get sorted for nursery/work myself. Of course have also had to pick him up which is usually at around 7ish so one night we were eating tea at 8:30pm.

Then lo came down with what I thought was a cold, until yesterday when she woke up sounding so croaky and had sticky eyes and sores around her mouth. So a day off work for me already with only going back last week and a trip to the Dr's. She's on antibiotics as her throat is all red and her tonsils inflamed and got eye drops for the sticky eyes. Thankfully her chest was all clear and so were her ears.

So all day yesterday was her getting upset with me with me giving her medicine but then on the flip side cos she was feeling yuck she then then just want cuddles. Amongst it all though she's started giving kisses, big open mouth and often dribble kisses, hahaha but she leans forward to kiss me which is just lovely.
