Should someone remind him of what the average wage actually is http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20442666.
Ps. I do quite a complex, responsible, job and earn a little more than this (but I am public sector so should be grateful for every penny :-) )

Shows how polarised the UK has become with the odd pockets of wealth. Won't City average pay be heavily skewed?

City is still very diverse in the range of jobs. Canary Wharf is the one that is skewed because of bankers.

I'd love a salary of £50000-£80000 up here I'd be made! Apparently the average salary up here is 17k. Although the majority of the folk I know are below that unless they work offshore

if the average (mean) is 17k then one would expect the majority of people received less that 17k
    it's basic maths

According to ONS the mean wage in inner London was about £42k in 2012 but median was £30k and 80% percentile was £50k.

Figures similar to ONS and although average is about £42k less than 50% of people earn less than £30k in 2012 and only 20% earned more than £50k I don't see that has changed much.

After reading again I see they are ONS figures for 2012 the figures I quoted so not change at all..

I think it has been well established home ownership is not possible on low income. An average person will struggle in most places immediately.
