You should alway change setting on a router hardwired to as you can lock yourself out over wifi. It also isn't unknown for people to end up changing a neighbours unsecured wifi rather than their own.0

Well Gunjac I'm on with another cable also plugged into router. When I check everything seems to be secure, but if I remove the additional cable I lose wifi. Also my ipad sees the renamed router and shows it as secure but won't let me join, although recognises the password - or seems to. I haven't gone back thro to Linskeys set up again as didn't expect to get on securely anyway. So not sure where to go from here. I have found the original set up disk for the router. I don't think anyone else had Linskeys around here, BT, Talktalk,virgin so don't now think I'm logged on elsewhere.0

might be time to 1. ensure you've got your ISP logon details, and 2. reset the router and start from scratch....once you do, re-connect all devices by wifi..

Thanks GunJack - yep - that was my thought too or get a man who knows! or go the Virgin route - have everything else with them. A case of nearly there but not quite and need to do hubbies tax return online, like within the next week or so (have done for years). Again sincere thanks for getting me thus far I'm annoyed with myself for knowing it is almost there but it's a case of a little knowledge............etc etc. Thanks again. Liz0

Hi - nope not quite - we have IT support with the company and they took over laptop with Teamviewer. I found out that the passphrase and password are two different animals but other than that still couldn't get wi fi on the laptop - but got it on ipad now. To be honest I couldn't be bothered for a while after that (actually didn't rate the guy who was on remote anyway - so had my doubts he'd get it anyway) and if all else fails I will just plug in when I need to do OH tax return! But will have another go myself sometime soon ! Many thanks for your interest. Liz0
