sounds like you'd be better off starting from scratch by changing the SSID and password for your wifi... does the label on the router have the IP address and login details on it (for the router itself, NOT the wifi key), alternatively what model of lynksys router is it for further advice?
Hi the IP address is
192.168.1.1
Model is. WRT54GC ver 2.0
Username <leave blank >
Password admin
Thanks again for help.0 -
okay, so on a device that's connecting ok to the router open a browser, type the ip addy into the address line, and log in to the router's interface. Find the wireless settings, change the SSID (network name) to something more memorable, and enter a new wifi key/password (the one you will use to connect to the wifi). Save the settings, reboot the router, and reconnect all your wifi devices to it - job done

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

worked my way thro it - renamed and then changed the only password area I could see after checking several tabs. The router is now called something else but is still unsecure. Also I have lost the connection on my ipad tho am hoping that rebooting that will allow me to reconnect.
Obviously I am missing something but have to thank you very much for getting me this far. Cross fingers that my ipad is OK.0 -
it isn't anything major, did you actually switch on the wifi security in the router's interface when you changed the network name? If not, it won't show as secured. Also, on any device, you'll have to scan for and connect to the new SSID (network name).......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Morning - at work now! have lost all internet entirely at home including Ipad. Re your note yes this is what kind of happened I think and in trying to put it right lost everything and can't seem to get it back. Hey ho! So I think the best thing is for me to start from fresh. Factory reset the Lynskys and go thro the procedure again. At least I have some idea , how, thanks to you. I will have another go this evening and won't bother you again until I can tell you that all is well - tho' it might mean me getting a Virgin wi fi (I'm on cable) and letting them set it up! Sincere thanks for you invaluable hand holding - I'm not afraid of delving anymore - with this anyway! Liz0 -

if you have a laptop, plug it into the router with an ethernet cable to re-setup the router (in the same manner as before, using IP address etc.). If you can't use any device wirelessly then this is the best (and reliable) way to do this
Good Luck, prob check in later to see how you're getting on

Re previous note and ethernet cable to router- is this better than just resetting it - there's a tiny hole underneath which needs prodding ??0

if you reset using the recessed reset button, you may well need to re-enter your ISP logon details, do you have them handy?
I personally if possible always change any router settings whilst hard-wired rather than over wifi, it is more reliable especially when it's the wifi settings you need to change
