  • Garage parking is likely to increase the quote.

Street parking is now cheapest option.

    Not round our way. ;)

adding a named driver where they are never going to be driving is insurance fraud.
No it isn't. Adding a named driver just means they will be insured to drive the car - it doesn't say whether or not they will drive.
  • I wanted to add a friend to my insurance for a weekend away to share the driving, would have cost £20 to do that but the insurance company advised if I put her on for the year I would get a refund of £27.50!! She is now always on as a named driver

I've heard about this a few times now.

What's the rationale behind it? (Not that insurance companies use rational thought when it comes to dreaming up premiums)!!

Can't understand how on street parking could be deemed safer than in a garage?

Sounds as if you're being treated reasonably. Obviously you're not going to get full discount until you've got six years behind you but, as others have suggested, adding another named driver to the policy could help. It's worth asking about isn't it?

It's also worth getting a few quotes. I'd be inclined to try a streetside brokerage, I've had a few pleasant surprises there rather than trying online.

The rationale is claim patterns. If more cars parked in garages are subject to claims parking a car in a garage becomes more risky and therefore premiums rise. Key theft is now a major way cars are stolen. Expensive cars are often parked at expensive properties and these are targetted for key theft.

If a car is parked on a street how do the key thieves know which house the keys are in?

Add an older experienced driver as a named driver.

Check who's offering the most cashback through Quidco/Topcashback and get specific quotes from those insurers.

Getting car into a garage which is often not much bigger than the car introduces a risk of scraping or crashing the car against pillars, walls etc which will always be a fault claim (ie insurer pays).

Lots of cars are stolen from driveways because its obvious to thieves which house the keys will be in (insurer pays).

Cars parked on the street don't obviously "belong" to any particular house so risk of theft is deemed lower.

Possibly because modern cars have increased in size while garages have remained the same. Is it just me or are car parks becoming more difficult to park in?.
