Whether or not a claim materialises is immaterial, now that you have reported the incident it remains on your record and will have to be disclosed to future insurers.

The only practical difference for you is whether or not you have lost a protected NCD "life".

Your insurer should let you know about a claim, though probably not till it had been concluded.

Your insurer will deal with the claim probably without further reference to you (unless the third party story is vastly different to your own).

Fivetide did say "unless they ask" he wouldn't admit fault. Not quite the same as not bothering and just driving away.

Spot on, I was talking about speaking with the insurance company, not just driving off. Thanks Alice.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Oh thanks, I assumed my insurer would contact me to let me know that a claim had been made. The driver said he would contact me first and try to settle outside of the insurance company; it would probably work out better for him to do so as well, unless the damage is very bad.

My insurer did tell me that if nothing further happened it would not affect my NCD at all, although yes I am aware I need to inform future insurers that it happened. I thought it a bit risky to just not inform my insurer and then they suddenly get a call. I told them I had photos of the Audi. Surely they need to verify with me before they go ahead and pay out?

I have a feeling the driver just hasn't got round to doing anything about it yet, or maybe isn't bothered enough to do anything at all.

After all this time I heard nothing - now it has come to renewal and I've tried to find out. My insurance co. has done nothing but said the claim is open.

Think I will just move to a different company as they can't give me a deadline as to when this will be closed. They just said there is authorisation for a claim; but nothing has been done. Since December!!!

I don't know what to add on comparison sites; just mention an accident where I was at fault and claim is open? Ridiculous - my insurance co. seem to think it can remain open indefinitely but surely most people would do it straight away - and if they don't they might be adding on their own damage. I did take photos thankfully.

Should I just switch to Direct Line or Privilege and give them the info I have? Current insurer has added on £150 even though they havent' had to shell out anything. Surely there is a time limit?

PS thanks for previous advice too. I am glad I did disclose it (not that I would be dishonest but I wasn't sure what I had to do) - the driver told me he wasn't going to make a claim and would do it via me but maybe it was more expensive so he decided to go via insurance.

The person you hit, has up to 6 years to claim from you.
Most insurance companies will leave the claim open for 6 months, but it varies with company.

If you go to another insurance provider, then when they check their database they will see there is a pending at fault claim on your file. As such, they will treat it the same as at fault.
Once this is closed off, if no claim is made you would be due at least a partial refund for the increased premium. If you go with another insurance company, this partial refund would be harder to obtain

It may be the other driver decided not to pursue the claim. So your insurer opened the claim when you advised them, as they have heard nothing from the other party, they are just keeping the claim open the are contacted in the future, which is why they cannot give you a date.

Irrespective of whether or not a claim emerges, you now have the incident on your file.

So although not indefinitely, you do need to disclose it to new insurers you approach for quotes (usually they ask for your history for the last 3/5 years)

Having outstanding claims at renewal time isn't unusual, so any insurer you approach should be able to accommodate you telling them its open but not yet concluded.

OK thanks. Well if other insurance companies have factored it in, which they should have as I gave them the right info, it's not too bad if I go elsewhere. £204 for the year.

As my present insurer was quoting £150 more than several others, I've gone elsewhere but told them the quote is open. Reasonably happy with this.
