Hit another car whilst parking

  • Oh maybe I wasn't very clear - I had moved towards contemplating not paying for the damage, but going via the insurer, and then being charged an extra £50 a year on my insurance instead, as I would rather not have a bill of £150 upwards at the mo.

You're likely to be charged £50 a year extra whether you pay or not now you've informed them.

OK, thought so but was assuming I probably couldn't afford the bill at the mo. It is an Audi after all..and the door seemed to be scratched as well as rear panel. Just decided that anyway I've enough NCD and good driving history, so won't be the end of the world. also no point in paying for insurance and then not claiming when I have an accident.

I may have damaged a sensor as my car alarm seems slightly erratic now - will keep an eye on it but the car park isn't visible from my flat so when i hear it I have to rush out to check. Then it stops. :D. Not going to claim anything on my car though; if it carries on i will get it fixed but it has only been 3x and was brief.

I haven't heard from the owner yet..

You may not - he may have passed this to his insurer to deal with, in which case they will contact your insurer (in the fullness of time), or contacted your insurer direct himself.

If you do get contact from the third party just tell him that you have decided to let the insurers sort it out, and politely ask him not to contact you further.

If you get any correspondence then pass it on unanswered to your insurer to deal with.

And unless they ask, no I wouldn't be admitting fault. Never been asked over the phone personally only on the official claim forms.

So, are you the sort of person who just drives away from an accident of your making, without owning up to the damage caused?
What a wonderful attitude - NOT!:(

Not sure who this question is directed at?

Just a thread hijacker ...yawn..this isn't the point of the thread by the way.. the question was about whether it was legal to settle outside of insurance companies, which it is.

Fivetide did say "unless they ask" he wouldn't admit fault. Not quite the same as not bothering and just driving away.

I wonder whether I'm going to hear from the driver - still nothing.

Most of the fuss was caused by the rude passer-by. It was only a scratch but may have sounded worse than it was.

They have 6 years to pursue a claim for damage.

If they put in a claim to their own insurer that can take weeks/months to get through the system to your own insurer and then from them to you.

I think unlikely that anyone would leave it too long. I put in a claim immediately when someone hit my car. Although that was because it was written off. I suppose he may not have had time to get any quotes yet etc.
