You are responsible for all the costs resulting from this (not just the garage bill).

This will include any hire car required whilst the repairs are carried out etc.

There is also the chance that more work is found necessary once the car is stripped down during the repairs.

You can leave this to the insurance to deal with then if cost effective to you to get your lost ncd reinstated you can reimburse your insurers their outlay.

OK, had no idea I could do it that way. Thanks.

    .

There can't be any more than surface damage caused by me. I must have been doing less than 5mp - just parking. There is only a scrape on the back corner of his car. Fair enough if I have to pay for a hire car. For some reason the guy seemed happy to get it done without a claim. I guess these things end up being a nightmare once insurance co.s are informed. My friend told me today that as it is in an NCP it is not reportable as it would be on a public road, but I suspect that isn't right - ie reportable to the police.

Sounds like it could just be a "Smart" repair at around £150.00.

    Being optimistic. :)

I haven't heard from the owner yet, and not informed my insurance co yet either. Was going to wait to hear from him first but it sounds like I should inform the insurance co. and then settle with them if they pay up, if I don't want my ncd affected.

Your friend is wrong, in that an incident happening in an NCP isn't "reportable". If the public have access then being private land is irrelevant as far as reportable is concerned.

You have exchanged details so the police won't be interested as no personal injury involved.

Thanks Quentin. He's just an acquaintance really and does seem a bit full of hot air half the time. He actually said to me that I should have just driven away and nothing could be done about it. Apart from other people around at the time having a go at me, and clearly most people would report something like that if the driver not present. I think I would.
  • I think I should call my insurer tomorrow. Otherwise they might cancel my insurance if they found out from third party.

Yes but again - state information only. No need to say you were even at fault. Simply a bumper touch in a car park. Nothing more.

BTW if you claim for it then try to pay them back chances are they will have your trousers down as all sorts will be added to the bill.

Hopefully, the guy is as good as his word and gets it sorted for you at a reasonable price.

When you pay him, get a receipt, signed, that says "full and final payment" just in case he decides the car was full of people who all now have whiplash etc.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Kind of obvious who's at fault when you hit a stationary vehicle. They will ask how it happened.

Yes true, difficult to find any other way of explaining.

Just realised that I have 7 years' no claims which I paid to have protected. Would this mean that even if my insurer has to pay out, it won't affect my no claims bonus? Surely it should in some way as I am at fault.

I can't understand how I did this - doh. I just didn't seem to be even looking at the car properly to check that i was judging the space but with so many years' driving experience it is a bit dim.:(
