Asda misuse of my payment card

Options
I have joined MoneySavingExpert specifically to vent my anger over this issue, so apologies if I am not posting in the correct place.

I had an order with Asda to deliver 182.53 worth of groceries. They were unable to supply all the items and so charged me 159.86 for what they did deliver. All well and good so far. BUT they had also 'ringfenced' the original amount of 182.53, so that it appeared as a pending amount on my bank account. So although Asda had taken the 159.86 for the goods delivered, there is also an additional 182.53 which I am unable to use from my account as it is still 'pending' (7 days and counting now).

At this holiday time, and as I don't get paid until the end of the month, being unable to withdraw this money has caused me to have to cancel activities I had planned, including a visit to see a sick relative in London.

I called customer services (in South Africa apparently) and all they could say (i.e. read from their script) was tough luck really, that's how it works and it's the bank's fault. Well, it is not the bank's fault. The bank did not make two separate charges, Asda did.

I explained how inconvenienced I have been by this, but the robot-person on the phone just repeated their script.

Suffice to say I will not be using Asda home delivery again, nor shall I be visiting any of their stores again, except perhaps to use the toilets if I find myself caught short.

Learn from my experience: do NOT use Asda's home delivery service unless you have the money spare to have additional funds ringfenced for '3-10 days' if they cannot deliver any of the items.

Regards,

Andy

£22 caused you all them problems whilst you will happily spend nearly £200 on christmas food.

    Makes no sense.

That's not what the op said happened.

I think OP is saying that Asda have ring fenced the £180 amount AND taken the £150 amount too. It sounds like someone has not confirmed the original transaction but rather made a second transaction. Not sure why OP doesn't get their bank to rectify it though.

Never have and never would. But then I did read the T&C to know what the risks are and my reasons for not doing so. ;)

I believe that the OP was charged the actual price of the goods as well as having the full charge reserved, so not a matter of just £22.

On the plus side if you've only got to wait till the end of the month till you've got paid then you've only got 2 more days to go!

The retailer should be able to reverse the authorisation to remove the ring fencing. I am surprised they wouldn't do that for you

I don't know whether they can.

Last year, I was buying a laptop over the net and something went wrong with the site. I had given my details but didn't get a confirmation email. My bank said that the transaction had not been completed, but that the money was ringfenced and would take x days to be released, unless cancelled by the seller.

Yes its only Asda who can cancel the authorisation in this situation. The bank can't do anything

I've never heard of a firm doing that - if Tesco haven't got items, they just charge the price it actually is, and the original amount never appears anywhere.

Mind you, Asda is a crappy shop, so I'm not surprised.

I don't use Asda as we don't have one here, but through reading these forums it is something I have come across before, more than once.

Tesco used to do it with online grocery shopping but they have changed their processes now so it doesn't happen.
