Move to South Wales

Hi I'm looking at a move to South Wales as i have relatives near there. I'm single and have about £80,000 to buy a place. I've looked at house prices and seems I will only be able to afford a terraced house or a house that needs modernised. I want somewhere nice, friendly, not
rough (no chav areas please), easy access to the countryside, perhaps near Cardiff or Newport as I need to buy from auctions & car boots etc as part of my business. Thanks for any replies.
From September 2008 - Wepromiseto £133.19, Greasypalm £46.16, Quidco £519.78, Cashback Kings £74.54. Vouchers £31.00. myhpf £21.03
Topcashback £159.72 Matchbetting £24.70 MORTGAGE FREE END OF JULY 2015 (YIPPEE!)
Bank Switching £640.00

Not locals, but we have stayed in Cowbridge a few times and found it a lovely small market town.
  • Hi Thanks but I am looking for a place near the border and no further West than Cardiff.

  • With £80,000 as your budget Cowbridge is too expensive anyway. Bits of Cardiff are still affordable, Splott, Cardiff Bay/Grangetown are possibilities as is Ely. Not the most scenic of areas but I lived in Splott for 5 years and it was perfectly okay.

If you're prepared to be further away from Cardiff, Caerphilly is probably worth a look - you'll get more for your money if you're willing to look at the valleys. Be warned though the property market in the valleys compared to Cardiff itself is pretty flat and has been for some time, if you're planning on buying as an investment versus looking for a home primarily you'd be better off stretching yourself and buying in the capital.
  • you get a LOT more for your money in a valleys town, fast rail connections to cardiff(soon to be electrified)

  • My only advice, stay away from Glyncoch in the Pontypridd area. Really rough area.

Hope you find somewhere nice soon! I miss living in South Wales :(

Try np11 and np12 postcodes on rightmove, nice areas and only 10 minutes away from newport by car.
  • I think someone needs a word about getting a property ready for sale.

  • Thanks for the postcodes, I've found some very interesting properties. I realised I needed somewhere close to the border and these are showing properties quite near Newport.

You are welcome. As a local I can advise of some areas to avoid

    Swfyrrd
    Pantside
    Llanilleth
    Manor Way (Risca)
    Holly Road (Risca)

Everywhere else is a good area :)

Just a tip also, if you are looking at Cardiff or Newport, the cheap areas are pretty rough. To live in a nice area around Newport you are talking a lot of money, as most of it is awful :)
