I did attend an interview this year where the salary was advertised as "competitive", the interview was going well until the director mentioned the salary on offer.

I burst out laughing and advised him that we should terminate the interview as we were wasting each others time.

I was offered a job where they were looking for trustworthy people due to the nature of the confidential information involved, premium would be paid. That premium was 6p above NMW.

my last interview was for a car hire place, a national company, working with the customers, inspecting the cars on return, opening up etc etc min wage! oh and zero hours :rotfl:

nice one, they think a interview is a one way street, it works both ways.

Never forget that an interview works both ways, although if your unemployed you cant afford to be as picky.

I did send that company an invoice for my wasted time and fuel, and they paid up within a week.

it's a pain when vacanies don't say what hourly rate they are offering...anyone been to an interview where they were asked what wage they were looking for? or do they normally just tell you at the interview?

I have just applied for one and don't know what to ask for it I get an interview.
You can ask when/if you get asked to come to an interview - obviously ask before you attend.

What I find annoying is that the salary is a gauge to the level of the job. I have seen jobs which were for a assistant and for a manager at the same company, the job descriptions were near identical, copy and pasted.

    .
I have seen jobs advertised at £33k and they have turned out to be junior roles where the salary matched the job spec but not what they were really looking for. Someone with 2 years max experience!

I see it with jobs i look at. But i know the going rate and the yearly salary will vary at the very most by 5k, and obviuosly I know which end of the scale id accept. As with interveiws job offers can be declined as they are also a two way street.

That's not how it works. It is how much the role is worth, not how much you are.

    A doctor becoming a cleaner can't demand £100k.

That's not what I said, and you are being facetious.

Last year I was paid £13,000 p/a for a sales role in a national company, my total income accounted for 10% of the whole northern territory (Berwick to Nottingham.) Now, if I were going to interview next week for a sales job, I would argue that if a company wanted to see that kind of performance, they would have to make an offer in excess of 13k.

that wouldn't be difficult as the min wage is just over £13k anyway;)
  • I think some companies are cautious about advertising a salary as their competitors will know what they are paying. If you saw a job advertised that caught your attention, give them a call and ask what pay range it is. They should at least be able to give you a rough idea, and if it's not what your looking for at least you haven't wasted too much time.
