Do people not see this as an oppotunity whilst in a interveiw? The how much do you expect question can be answered with the top end of expectations.0

depends on the job...I have a feeling the type of job I go for, they take the lowest offer. If you have a skill not many other people have then yes why aim low, but if I were in that situation I wouldn't even be turning up for an interview without knowing the rate before hand.0 -
I had a telephone interview earlier this year, I didn't know the salary when I applied for the job as it wasn't stated so I asked. I was later called back and told that the salary was now £2k less than I had been told earlier that day!
I asked why and was never given a straight answer. I decided that the salary was now too low and said so. I've always thought that they were trying to play me off against somebody else to see who would take the lowest wage0 -
The worst is the agencies. I have know them to do the whole;
To the job seeker 'How much do you want?'
Jobseeker 'no less than £25k'
To the company 'He won't accept less than £28k'
Company: "Ok £28k is agreed'
To the jobseekers: 'I got you £25k, congratulations, you start Monday'0 -

Yes, I went for a role through one of them and the company told me the starting salary was actually £4k less than the agency had said. Had I known this I wouldn't have wasted time and petrol going to the assessment.
I also went for an interview recently where both the salary and annual leave entitlement were described as "competitive". In actuality the salary was less than what I was earning straight out of college nearly 25 years ago and nearly half what I've been earning the past few years. The annual leave was statutory minimum, so another complete waste of time.0 -
I had an interview about a month ago, in the ad it said competitive salary, like a muppet I didn't ask the hourly rate at interview, but my ex employer who are industry leaders pay a pound more than nmw. So I assume the company pay less than my ex employer. Still waiting hear back from them in the new year, need to weigh up the pro's and con's if I get offered the job.0

I have an interview next week for a position I applied for on spec, so there was no description. It's an industry I don't work in but have been trying to break into. I have NO idea what the salary is and I'm dreading them asking me what I'm looking for.My Debt Free Diary

take a look on Monster and indeed for a similar job, that should give you an idea.
I don't think you need to worry tho, as most I expect will be telling you what the wage is, I doubt many ask the interviewee for a figure.0 -

If you saw a job advertised that caught your attention, give them a call and ask what pay range it is. They should at least be able to give you a rough idea, and if it's not what your looking for at least you haven't wasted too much time.
I get what you're saying, but isn't it easy for a 'competitor' to just call and ask what the salary is (or even apply for the job and attend an interview), especially considering that 'spying on the competition' is actually part (or the whole) of someone's paid job.0
