I know, his point was this weren't the usual vans, but they probably have different types, or so many partnership ones.

Sad or not, we're going to have to go back and see if they are out again! :D

Well the dvla are the only ones I've seen using a tripod in the last 10 years or so.

    DVLA use marked vans.

The OP stated that the van had no speed camera markings, not that it was unmarked. The DVLA quite regularly park up on a major road near me, in a white Berlingo sized van that just has a couple of DVLA stickers on it, that would be easy to miss as you drive past looking at the camera.

Yes, it had markings of some sort on it but nothing that jumped out as being a speed camera or DVLA and they usually are distinctive in these parts.

Best ANPR spot I saw was in the decelerating traffic to Old Trafford.

Big match on, plenty of police management in place & all filtered past the camera.
    Smile please!
It has been easy to pick up three points at Old Trafford recently.

As they also do for speed cameras.

The most likely is an ANPR camera. Remember they aren't just used for checking tax and insurance, they are also used for security. And they also often use unmarked vehicles, just as they also have many small and discreet fixed cameras all over the place (especially security sensitive areas.
  • If you were that concerned you should have taken a photo or asked them. Its either a speed camera or anpr but we'll never know for sure.

    Or a traffic survey.

To be honest I have not seen a tripod used for some time and the ones I have seen looked like a camera flash so they may have changed since.

I still think the ANPR ones always have a pursuit vehicle with them to catch offenders.

It depends on what they are being used for.

Also the police vehicles may be hidden (as they often are), or they could have gone because they have just pulled someone else over. They usually instruct the drivers that they pull over to follow them to a large layby or car park, where there may be various organisations parked up.

Or maybe they were using a hire van.
  • It's another example of the surveillance state we now live under in the UK, unfortunately.

Still, it's an easy way to make a lot of money in a short space of time.

So you don't think criminals should be taken off the road then?
