Did they bill you? If so were the payments / balance not rising
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Wow, where is the love, people?? Why is everyone getting so judgemental on here.

Op, I think you are right in a way, if you are not billed for something - that is the fault of the supplier - it is NOT up to you to do their job for them. Having said that, I notice if anything is amiss immediately, but I am a complete tightwad - and am constantly checking my bank account etc - but I know not everyone does this and a direct debit is seen as a guarantee that you are covered - If you set up a direct debit, what more can you do, other than chase them repeatedly to do their job correctly? I really don't understand why people are being so harsh

I have issues with NPOWER. It is all over the news that they are messing up in this way with thousands of bills.

They stopped taking our montly amount in September. I noticed within a week of the first missed payment - I have contacted them at the very least, a dozen times about this (could be twice this amount of phone calls and emails) - and they cannot seem to sort themselves out and make excuses each time I speak to them...so it is neither here nor there weather you noticed immiedately or not, doesn't solve your problem

Have you saved the extra £100 a month so you are covered when the bill does come?. We are documenting each conversation and email with them - and just saving the money to pay the bill when it lands. Don't really know what more can be done.

We are moving house in January and needless to say, will be switching at that point

Also, if you haven't got the money saved - I would cancel your Direct Debit immediately as if they sort out their billing problems, they will probably just wipe out your account. They are notorious for taking whatever montly payments - we were getting different montly bills ranging from a mere £5 up to £145 - even though we had provided meter readings so not because of estimated billing or anything. its a complete mystery to me

Furthermore, to chasing up companies to bill you, I know someone who booked a holiday to the Maldives for a fortnight - went first class all the way - paid on credit card, went and had holiday of a lifetime and forgot all about it. A couple of weeks later she realised that they had not charged her the £6k that she owed, and did she chase them up for a bill...Noooooooo - this was over 7 years ago and has never recieved a bill

Look, guys, direct debits are not there to save you the hassle of checking they have been paid they are to save you the hassle of paying the bill yourself and are a useful budgeting tool. The op probably didnt check his account at all and just looked at the headline figure. Everybody should check their accounts on a regular basis (once a week at least) to make sure they are ticking over, bills are paid and there is no fraud going on. Op, you made an error, so did npower, but you cannot expect to get away with paying because of your laziness.

Why are people so awful on this thread! The OP has got a valid complaint and all people are doing is attacking them and calling them lazy....

Lazyness or not, wouldn't have made a difference to the situation, as I said, I am in the same boat, noticed immediately, chased them up on multiple occasions, and they still cannot resolve it. There is a serious failing here. Even if the OP had noticed and chased them up, as I have, he would still be in the same exact position. So for all peoples judgements and quite obviously trying to make the OP feel far worse about things than they already do - SHAME ON YOU

The difference is that the money is (from thd sound of it) not on one side as they didnt check their account. Now they have to pay it back and they say it is unreasonable for npower to ask for the money. Yes,npower made a mistake but if the money is still there the op could just pay it off and possibly receive interest on it if their account pays that and maybe compensation as well for npowers mistakes. If he spent the money he only has himself to blame for that.

If the money hasn't been taken by npower, then it doesn't spend itself. npower haven't covered themselves in glory, but it doesn't change the fact that the OP has had an interest free loan, with a reduction in bill as goodwill.

If you want things to be sugarcoated there's always mumsnet.

So you feel the need to post, repeating almost word for word the post above you, and add a little patronising because someone doesn't agree with you?

What brain power that must have taken...

The post above mine, and every other response, is accurate. I can't disagree with you, as you haven't actually presented an argument other than asking people to show some love.

What should the OP expect? Not to pay for the energy they've consumed? I have to, and I don't see why the OP should be absolved of this responsibility.
  • It's a well-known phenomenon on MSE, if people have too much money in their bank account, they "never noticed".

But if they are five quid short, they scream instantly "blue murder!".
