1980s Baxi Bermuda

Options
There is a skip down the road with an old Baxi Bermuda gas fire and back boiler tossed on it from a house renovation.

Is it still legal to install these?

I'm thinking free fire and boiler install project for the new year. :D

Obviously it would be re-installed by a gas safe bod. :D

I have a Baxi Bermuda that was installed back in 1982. It is a very simple design, has been remarkably reliable and cost a minimal amount to maintain over the past 30 years (about £80 for parts, plus the usual annual service). Also, spares are still readily available.

The downside is that it's about 65% efficient as against the 90%+ efficiencies of modern condensing boilers (which I suspect will not last 30 years!).

I know that current building regs will not let you install a new non-condensing boiler, but I'm sure one of the RGIs that frequent this site will tell you whether or not you can install a secondhand one.

I was told that I could even move my existing 1970's boiler three feet to the left because it would count as an new installation.

I'd love to know if it is true.

I am wondering whether the back boiler to the fire is still operational. Baxi Bermudas are good fires and turn out loads of heat/trouble-free (apart from the annual maintenance visit) and well worth keeping.

The back boiler behind it may no longer be functional..but just a left-over from a previous era.

Certainly the Baxi fires themselves are capable of being operated on their own.

In your position..I'd rescue the fire and leave the back-boiler in the skip.

Another reason for not bothering to try and rescue the back-boiler is that those back-boilers are only capable of "powering" up to 5 radiators (in other words won't be up to the job unless you've only got a 1 bedroom home and maybe not even then).
  • I'm sure it is probably still working as it was probably still in use right up until it came out.

Even if the back boiler is broken, after looking around the web, you can still buy them new.

We run 12 off of ours in a four bed semi - no problem at all.
