Yes... there is much controversy surrounding freemasons, and conspiracy theories abound. I have heard a few theories, from plausible to fantasy. Seems to me like a big back scratcher's club... set up to help fellow travelers rise through the ranks of the business world (and exclude others). Although, some weird and alarming religious rites are attached.
All I know from personal experience is that my great grandfather was a Mason. My great uncle would argue with him saying he just didn't think it was right to take a secrecy "oath unto death" (which was required.) After his death my great grandma was visited by one of the members who wanted her to allow him to be buried with his leather loin cloth to guard his soul. She said no thank you... could you please leave!
Erm... what's with the loin cloth? :eek:
Do the WI members get Leather bras and thongs?!0 -
It's best not to go dressed in a goats skin apron with one trouser leg rolled up!0

Women can join but it is a seperate branch just for women and it is not really recognised by the men.
I would stick with the themed aspect of it. I know a lot of younger people who are in the msaons and it seems to be more of a networking type thing now. They do do a lot for charities though but why it is so secret?????? who knows???
Give it a try you might like it, if it is not for you then let your OH join if he wants cos I think there are only a couple of things a year women are invited to and you could accidently be busy then!!!0 -
Not so long ago a Masonic Dance was the event of the social calendar.0

I know exactly where people are coming from with regards to the Masons as when hubby joined 6 years ago, we had exactly the same conversation.
To be honest it does depend on the attitude of the lodge as to how anal they get ......the ones I know don't might the proverbal taken out of them (with comments such as aren't you going to put your pinny on dear when you do the dishes?) but there are some around that would take offence.
As far as the events are concerned think smart casual...definitely not jeans and for the evening do ..think evening dress.2014 Target;

was invited as a guest to a Ladies evening many years ago, yes had to wear a formal long dress in those days.
2 things come to mind, the men received a pressie (cufflinks) and the toasts went on for so long that i was toasting in [SIZE=-1]Liqueurs as I didn't realise that they would do so,so,so many toasts and I had gulped my wine down too early. Was worth going just for the experience.
