morning all
hope everyone is well
according to a weather thing ive just read the uk is set for a minin heatwave at the weekend, not sure i believe it will happen on a bank holiday but we can live in hope.
freespirit, at the local records office £10 gets you a half hour search.
the first time i had one done i got an envelope back with a photocopy of a page from the industrial school records book it details why my mils dad was sent there.
he was charged with lodging in an outhouse under the vagrancy act so sent to the industrial school untill he was 16. its quite a detailed record as it gives physical descriptions and background on the character and the state of the family. ie mother had died dad was a poor builders labourer and the boy was "practically a street arab"
his brother who was like your grandad killed ion the great war i just got a letter about detailing what they found but i really want to go and get copies of these documents
it says they have full detailed records of theindustrial school admission register the detention order and his birth certificate. the 'old boys' report register which includes a full page of notes on his progress from 1906 to 1915 (after leaving the school) mentioning him working in Wales, joining the regiment etc and the last entry states that he was a POW. which has never been mentioned by anyone before.
not sure how much it will cost me to get these but it will be facinating for my children even if mil isnt interested.
blooming tasty, sorry to hear things have been difficult for you but i wish you luck with your cakes and hope everything goes well with your new ventureSPC~12 ot 124

hope your weekend is lovely as well his missus, even if you do have to work. im a bit lower down than you (more middle england in the shires)
ive got freespirit to thank for a lovely morning. a nice brisk walk into the next town and back spaced out by a look thought the old files in the records office and ive ordered the ones i wanted. a couple of small copies i bought home with me but the bigger ones from the book need scanning so they are emailing me those. think the pow mention may be a red herring as it written after the date we think he died so im going back another time to look through old newspapers to see if anything is said about him in those.
got to have a quick tidy now and get ready for workSPC~12 ot 124

hope everyones ok and planning for crimbo has continued in my absence. Started a minor panic the other day as don't feel like I've done much. Went to Chelmsford NCT sale on saturday and managed to get a few bits for DD which was good.
Have also spent some time setting up a Facebook page for my new(ish) business. If I'm allowed to ask, if you could take a trip over and give me 'like' that would be fab. Surprise suprise its Blooming Tasty. Have been doing flowers and cakes for some time but now making it official. Got environmental health coming in a fortnight to inspect my kitchen so will be spending some time scrubbing oven, walls and worktops. Tiny bit afraid of that side of things even though you could eat off the floor most of the time. I do like the smell of bleach!

mrs-moneypenny wrote: »ive hit a wall with my family research at the mo, ive got as far back as my mums mums mums mums mum. but someone else in the family has told me her maiden name was one thing but the copy of the marriage cert gives a different surname for her and her dad. because some of her siblings have the surname i was told was hers and some the one shes drawn her mark against on the marriage cert and one has a mixture of both. im not sure if she was born one thing then her mum remarried so she swapped her name or if i was just told wrong. im going to leave it for a bit then come back to it.
i got on ok helping my mil with hers but once i discovered that her mum had 7 of her sisters before getting married and her dad had spent time at the local naughty boys school she kind of wanted me to stop looking. me and my DH found it all fascinating. i still need to go to the local records office to collect some stuff about her dads brother (my Dhs great uncle who was killed in the war) found out hes on a war memorial in a twon not far away and records office said they found some good stuff about him when i paid them to do a £10 search. i just need to go and buy copies so i can read it for myself.
We get stuck after great great grandad on mums side, he was an orphan, AND added letters to his surname because he didn't like it *rolls eyes*.
Great grandma on dad's side is an interesting one too, when she died we found her diary, it said "surname now but not forever" then she married someone with the same surname so she did have it forever lol.
xI hope you know your capable, & brave, & significant.

PIXTOTTS im surprised people find half their relatives with all the name changesthat reminded me of your grandma, when my nan died (my mums mum) one of my uncles told my mum that 2 of their brothers were adopted by my nans husband in his first marriage, they had all grown up thinking they were related, it was such a shock and my nan never said a word before she died, the secrets that lady carried with her to the grave was a goldmine of info :rotfl:mind you my mum cant talk i only found out i had a sister a few years ago (she had her adopted) when i was a member of a family history site on the internet
CHRISSY :rotfl::rotfl:This morning i was worrying myself silly about the heatwave this weekend now its a coldsnap, i give up!
