Something makes me think the story in the Mail might be a set-up, but it serves to illustrate the kind of situation people might find themselves in if they take out loans. Today's wants shouldn't come over and above tomorrow's needs.
Its Daily Mail central casting christmas story - unemployed, single mother, pay day loans i just need "over run by Romanian immigrants" for DM bingo:beer:0 -

I'm always amazed at the 20 somethings who have bought their boyfriends/girlfriends hundreds of pounds worth of presents. Some examples in my office are the girl who got her boyfriend a £300 leather jacket, and the bloke who's bought his girlfriend a trip to New York. Another girl has bought her 22 year old boyfriend of a few months a new Xbox.
I'm the same age and my boyfriend and I spend about £50 on each other and we think that's quite a lot lol! We're quite happy with this level of spending, but it does make me wonder where other people get the money from.
Never heard about husbands before but that's quite an interesting thing you mentioned. We normally do up to £100 each, but we've been together 6 years. I bought DH a trip to the Le Mans 24hr race but that's a joint Christmas and 30th birthday in May present. I just couldn't hold it in til may so it became a joint present :rotfl:What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..0 -
I think it's crazyness - not just at christmas but birthdays too! My kids don't have too many toys at and are so grateful for what they get and really appreciate the little things - always say thanks and call me the best mum ever. They WANT a lot more at times esp when other kids at school get ipads, xbox etc but know it ain't gonna happen on my watch! Want them to have fun memories more than expensive toys0

I'm surprised at the amount of iPads, tablets, laptops etc that get given to wee ones. I've heard of more than one 4-6 year old getting them this year and to me it just seems like a wholly inappropriate present to give
I always said I wouldn't get my two laptops, ipads, tablets etc until they were much older. But then OH discovered he was going to be working away from home, so I got one for him and one for the children (both under 5) so they could Skype. I feel thoroughly embarrassed when eldest tells people they got a tablet for Christmas0 -
I'm a bit saddened reading some of the comments really.
So, because the number of presents under our tree is probably quite crazy that must mean that we are all incredibly spoilt and ungrateful or in debt for it? Or we bought each other a load of rubbish for the sake of it.
Or maybe, we planned, were savvy with boots points, tesco points etc and really put a lot of effort and thought into the gifts we gave.
I booked a surprise trip to NY for my daughter and then fiance last year as a surprise xmas present, so I must be super, super crazy then. I didn't realise that there were limits on how much you should spend on boyfriends..........As it happens, the money came from a PPI refund but looking at some of the gossiping on here, I hate to think what people might have thought about how I funded it.
Does it really matter what other people do?

TBF, it seems to be more the fact that people are rubbng it in other peoples faces how much they've spent on presents.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

But I could be seen to be doing that if I were to put a pic on FB, the reverse is true though. I bought loads of gifts with doubled up Tesco and Boots points accumulated over the past 12 months, but you wouldn't know that just by looking at a pile of presents.
I would perhaps re think who I am friends with if I felt these people were intentionally trying to be bigger or better than others.......

It's not the fact that too many people have spoilt too many other people and their kids, pets etc.
It's the fact that so many people, instead of looking at all the presents under the tree and thinking "Actually, is this a bit much?" are, in fact, thinking "Let's put the picture of the prezzies on Facebook - so people can be wel jel!"
Not pictures of the kiddies opening their presents, not people wearing or holding individual presents just a trophy picture of a haul of prezzies as if to say "Top that!". Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0 -

I'd prefer these type of pictures. It is nice to see what presents others get.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

If people really think that about their Facebook friends I don't know if it says more about them or their friends.
Either they are paranoid & suffering the green eyed monster OR they have the wrong people as friends on Facebook.0
