The first time was at around 6am, and when I asked if I could try again, his reply was "you can but no point, as it will only decline again", yet I knew there was definitely enough money on my card. I felt this was more of a complain way I was spoken to than the OP, but of course that's just my opinion.
Anyway back to my story, After my failed attempts on other occasions, my partner tried to pay on her card and it was declined. I had money as I always do now for train journeys but as anyone else had any problems with places where it just never seems to work?

Almost a month has passed since contacting M&S customer services regarding the card issue.
Whether M&S, my bank or myself is to blame - having no response from customer services is not really good.
After having bank stating that the card was fine, but unable to use it (other than on-line) insisted that a new one was ordered.
Strange to see my alternative Card bill that I insisted for M&S to use that there was two debits (and one credit).
Not sure why - as I was only giving one receipt - at least I wasn't charged twice.
Guess I'll never know if it was the card, bank, or M&S was to blame.0
