Stores will be very reluctant to allow a swipe and signature transaction if the card has a chip. They become liable for the transaction if it turns out to be fraudulent and you would get people with stolen cards just damaging the chips to try and get things put through as swipe and sign.

Then you have the problem of customers not signing the back of the card even though is states 'not valid unless signed'. If they don't have anything signed on them, you cannot do that.

People need to check their cards and sign their cards.

Your forgetting the T&Cs of Visa/Mastercard:

Signature transactions can be disputed by the card owner and you as the shop have to prove that they made the payment that you are claiming for.

Chip and PIN transactions can still be disputed by the card owner, but they are far less likely to receive a refund unless they have reported their card lost or stolen before hand (and then there's still questions as to how they got the PIN).

Therefore you would never normally accept a swipe and signature if it was evident that the card supported chip and pin.
  • Slightly off topic here, but I didn't really think it warranted its own thread. I've tried to pay for a ticket twice now on northern rail, and on both occasions my debit card was declined.

The first time was at around 6am, and when I asked if I could try again, his reply was "you can but no point, as it will only decline again", yet I knew there was definitely enough money on my card. I felt this was more of a complain way I was spoken to than the OP, but of course that's just my opinion.

Anyway back to my story, After my failed attempts on other occasions, my partner tried to pay on her card and it was declined. I had money as I always do now for train journeys but as anyone else had any problems with places where it just never seems to work?

the cards are probably full authorization cards which means every transaction has to be authourized which cant be done on trains planes and some petrol stations

It's not really M&S's fault that there was a temporary glitch with Visa Debit, it happens a lot and there really is no point trying other readers, I spent 2 years on checkouts in Morrisons so I say this with experience. You had another card which worked so there isn't a problem, plus this proves it was a card glitch rather than a reader error. You could have walked that short distance to an ATM but admit you couldn't be bothered.

As mentioned. "I was at fault in trying to use card for payment instead of cash".

Turned out to be a card reader clitch with visa , and strangely not with Mastercard.

And yes, I couldnt be bothered going to a ATM, where chip and pin cards were designed to replace the need in carrying cash with you.

As are you. I have several Chip & Sig cards and these do not request any PIN. The difference is it is not up to the merchant to decide what method to use - my card forces the terminal to ask for a signature.
  • Well, exactly. A chip & signature card does not "support chip & pin" as quoted in the post you are arguing against...

I made the payment by Credit card (my suggestion), but stated that I was un happy with making a payment this way.

What inconvenience did this cause you?
  • Surely common sense would dictate that if you try the same thing twice and it doesn't work, there is no point in doing it 'many times'.

Should one not use their own initiative and common sense to try another payment method (such as a credit card, which you had, so why is it so much of an issue?) rather than making a fuss and leaving the manager/shop assistant to suggest, and then for you to get upset about it because it's not to your favour.

That said, when I worked for M&S a long time ago we did have a feature that we could save the transaction and put shopping aside so they could go to the customer service desk to sort it out there.

Which is absolutely fine as I stated in my post that you are quoting. Your card clearly doesn't support chip and PIN, and so the vendor wouldn't be expecting to use it.
