he was born in 1943 then - WW2 memorablia from that year? music? Big bands - my parents had an extensive record collection and I was brought up on that music. fond memories of family parties and the music from then was still very popular.

    That would be 1944 ;)

I have nothing of any use to add sorry I'm hopeless at men gifts, just be careful you don't end up buying needless things just to make up the numbers. You look like you've got a good start, good luck and I hope your dad has a wonderful birthday.

This. You could end up getting a lot of odds and sods that will get shoved in a sideboard drawer.

Hope you get it sorted and that your Dad has a great birthday x

We used to have a steam train alarm clock, btw. It used to 'chuff' when the alarm first went off, then build up to a full 'Hooo-hooo!' at the end.

Only problem was that not being digital, it was a nightmare to set the alarm time accurately, AND it would go off twice a day if not switched off. So then you'd forget to switch it on again ...

    Hi

If he likes supermarkets, I am sure I have seen the history of Sainsbury's book somewhere in a charity shop which wouldn't be too expensive.

You could get him a shopping bag from different supermarkets - 10p ones if funds are low or the more expensive ones if funds are not.

    Some QI help:

There is a board game although we found it a bit difficult to get the hang of.

The QI annuals tend to turn up in the poundshop after Christmas.

If you want me to make your life really difficult.... track down 70 presents that match or link into the 70 years of his life.... paper from his first year, picture from his second... framed school photo... war years... last steam train...endless difficulty but rewarding fun. I did something similar for one of my elderlies once.

It seems difficult at first, then gets easier when you are in the swing of things. The last four or five - without being repetitive - now they become a real challenge!
