70 gifts for Dad's 70th Birthday

My Dad turns 70 at the start of January.

I have decided (with the help of his sister - my wonderful Auntie) to get him 70 gifts which he will receive throughout the year.

Trouble is he is very hard to buy for so need some ideas please.

He likes:-

Trains
Books
Supermarkets
Libraries
Poo Humour
Horrible Histories
Weather
Sport (just watching not playing)
Quiz Shows such as Countdown, Pointless, QI etc
Tim Vine
History of War/ War related things such as the planes etc
Collecting 20p's
Crocodiles
Bash Street Kids
Computers

It does not matter how large or small the gift is as I am planning on some large gifts and others not quite as big. The plan is to give him some presents throughout the year and some will be posted to him during each month.

I already have:-

Steam Train Ride
Tickets to Horrible Histories Show at local theatre
Road Map Atlas
Polystyrene Glider (as he was born near Dunstable Downs)
Various quiz type games
Fake Snot
Horrible History Books
Crocodile Finger Puppet
Beano Notebook
Bottom Trumps Game

Can you come up with any more things? I am quite crafty so can also make quite a few bits if needed. The trouble with my dad is he is not your normal man - he hates travelling, BBQ's, ties, suits, etc.

I have trouble finding one gift for my dad never mind 70!

I have nothing of any use to add sorry I'm hopeless at men gifts, just be careful you don't end up buying needless things just to make up the numbers. You look like you've got a good start, good luck and I hope your dad has a wonderful birthday.

  • When My father was 60 I spent £60 on him and bought him a silver denarius which was in circulation in the Holy Land at the time of Jesus. It might have been one of the original 30 pieces of silver. Or it might not. He was very pleased. (I still have it as he died later that same year).

Anyway, how about a coin minted in the year of his birth. Or on some other date significant to him.

Newspaper from the day he was born. (There are websites where you can order these).

    How about a weather station?
Will you be able to arrange for him to ride in the cab when he goes on his steam train ride and perhaps have a go?
Treat other's how you like to be treated.

he was born in 1943 then - WW2 memorablia from that year? music? Big bands - my parents had an extensive record collection and I was brought up on that music. fond memories of family parties and the music from then was still very popular.

Do they have to be serious gifts?

I have done this for several big birthdays and given the gifts all at once, each gift being wrapped separately which added to the fun and surprise.

Here are a few ideas; samples of aftershave, anti wrinkle cream, 70 1ps ( or 20ps) -try to get shinny new ones, wallet, silly socks, pair of magic gloves, packet of favourite biscuits/crisps, bottle of washing up liquid and rubber gloves, pen, samples of shampoo or mini bottles, different beers or mini wine bottles, packet of seeds, packet of jelly babies etc, a lottery scratchcard or ticket, the meaning of liff book

You could write a few silly cheques..... for a picnic in the park, a trip to the cinema, a day out to the races/coast/dales etc

Hope some of these are of help. And your dad has a wonderful birthday.

One of those personalised calendars starting in the month of his birthday to kick things off - you could write some appointments in for treat outings - dinner or lunch out, visit to a railway museum, etc.
Maybe you could apply for tickets to be in the audience for one (or more) of his favourite TV shows?

sounds rather like my late father: when asked to show his passport for ID purposes he used to say "The last time I went abroad Mr Churchill sent me, and I didn't need a passport then."

A mug with an appropriate slogan. Pen, pencil, rubber, ruler (actually, consider his entire stationery situation, I bought Mum a decent stapler and sellotape dispenser because I hated using hers when I was helping her sort things out!). Keyring, calendars, bookmarks.

The Book People have a Tim Vine book and various QI fact books.

Would his local / favourite supermarket let him be a guest of honour one day / have a guided tour?

That's a big ask! My Mum turned 70 this month, so I bought her £70 worth of Amazon vouchers. Same idea, but easier to execute. She was delighted.
