Sky Multiroom box not working

My sky multiroom box has stopped working and I don't want to pay the £65 for an engineer to call followed by the likely cost of a replacement box or upgrade.

Can I simply buy a 2nd hand box from somewhere like ebay or Amazon and replace it or is there more to it than that?

You can just source another box from wherever you want and swap it. You just need to get the new box registered in place of the broken one

  • Is £65 that much to pay? Sky don't charge for a new box in addition to this.I think you may struggle to get a secondhand box for less. Do remember that Sky will arrange the swap out of any replacement they provide and it'll be guaranteed (for three months) as well.

Are you sure your box is terminally faulty?

I wasn't aware that a replacement box would be free. It was the combined cost of an engineer visit and the new box that was offputting for me.

You pay £65 for Sky to attend your fault. If the box needs replacing they will provide a reconditioned one with a three month guarantee. No other charges apply.

If you've had Sky for over ~4 years you can get the visit down to £40 if you moan a bit but don't say you want to cancel, if you want to cancel they will transfer to cancellations then you may get the box fixed for in descending order: £65, £40, £32.25, £15 or maybe free!

Remember this is a discussion about cancelling the extra room so make sure they know that this is the issue but that you may want to cancel the whole account today.

You may get a better offer if you confirm that you want to cancel but that you'd prefer to stay on the same price it's just that you cannot afford the box cost in Jan/Feb due to bills from Christmas.

You need top get them to sympathise with your plight then you will get the best offer.

Some will call your bluff though so beware.

How do you know its the box, rather than the dish cable or LNB?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I bought a working sky+ box off eBay for £25 to replace my multiroom box that wasn't a plus box, called sky & added it to my account. Have you swopped the multiroom box for your main sky box to check if it still works? Could be a cabling problem?

I sold my mutilroom box for £20on tbay
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • If we assume that it is a faulty box this is thankfully one of the easier haggles with Sky. Simply phone up to register the fault and politely but firmly express your dismay that they want to charge you £65 for a reconditioned box when you are currently a loyal customer already paying £xxx a month. Over the last 3 years I have had 3 replacements albeit they were basic Sky+ rather than HD boxes.

If only I was as successful at negotiating discounts off my whole package where the best I have ever got was 20% off for 6 months even when I let my cancellation notice get within 2 days. I find the whole haggle game a real pain but I love the product

Obviously your love of the product is preventing you getting the beast deals, which are reserved for those actually prepared to cancel. Being unable to hold your nerve until the service goes off (not two days before) is the problem here.
