To be honest, the company should really not be talking to you about this (and surprised they are, what with the data protection act). I'm not surprised you are being fobbed off. Your daughter needs to take the active role here.

There's nothing much you can do as far as liability is concerned, but if you push the company they may come up with a payment plan or agree to extend the payment time. If you pay late, you will be liable for any additional penalty in the contract (at least it will be statutory interest). Or they might decide to get a judgement against your daughter and send the bailiffs around.

In short, your daughter should not have left University without properly covering her debts. There's no magic bullet solution.

Thanks for the replies, she left because the course is wrong for her,she cannot switch courses sadly.
I totally understand that debt needs to be paid it's just a matter of how and when.
She was given a grant as part of her finance due to us being a low income family. Obviously this covered her rent and we do not have the means to give her the money upfront.
That said, she could have completed the degree and never used it, then owed a large amount whilst never earning enough to pay it back.

It is my daughter who is being fobbed off. :o

silvercar - it is a privately run accommodation (CRM).
  • If not already done, ask her to advertise the accommodation as available to rent on perhaps : facebook to friends ( ask them to help by spreading the news of available to rent), Uni forum, gumtree, letting agency, student forums, University letting agency etc. It is possible to let at this time of year because students who already have accommodation maybe looking for alternative for various reasons. Also Erasmus students who will be coming for one semester, will be looking for accommodation. It can be done reletting ( been there) .
  • I'm really surprised at this, I remember there was a long waiting list of people who lived too close like 20-30 miles away. Then when someone dropped out they got the room. Are they saying there's no waiting list? I wonder if she could advertise at the Uni or facebook or something, there might even be 2nd and 3rd year students who would use it.

Yes she has advertised through FB etc. We have also said to CRM that we would offer an incentive of 2 weeks free rent for someone to take it. Don't think the company will push if they're getting paid for an empty room.:o

But, if she'd completed this year (whether she went on to study somewhere else next year or not) she wouldn't have needed to pay back the grant. Is it too late for her to change her mind?

The girl had the privilege of going to university and dropped out, taking a place that someone could have had. I seems reasonable to ask why she left.

The OP was asking for advice/information. You were looking to score points/get a dig in. Sadly, there's an awful lot of that on MSE.

It does seem to make sense for her to stay on at Uni untill she finds a job at least...

I know its not same but my Dad made me stay at college untill I got a job as he didn't like me sitting at home doing nothing. :o

One option is to continue to live in the property. If she is no longer a student she should be seeking work and would then, I assume, be eligible to claim benefits including housing benefit to help pay her rent. As soon as she does find a job she can then pay her rent.

Given that Universities are more likely to be in larger towns where jobs may be more plentiful.

A less pleasant option is to leave and leave her house mates in the !!!!. I assume they have all signed a group tenancy and therefore be liable for her rent, so an incentive for them to help find a tenant to take her place. You would be surprised how many courses there are that have one or two terms on placements and then the students think that halls are the only place to rent for a part year.
