Decreasing spending - increasing happiness

  • I've just updated my signature with the latest balances - glad to be under another thousand number even if it is only by 2 pound :) the total I owe now is £82,998 - I managed overpayments totalling 35 pound to the morg in January and I've added 100 pound to my savings - had to do this (rather than overpay on the morg) as my pay is going to be much lower than normal in Feb so will have to dip into my savings to keep the monthly budget on track.

Very pleased that my morg interest has reduced by 20 pound per month over the last year - my interest is now approx. 209 each month - I take the view that this is like paying rent to stay in my home and the capital payment I (or my off spring) will get this back at some point.

Very pleased with the exercise I have done throughout January - got around 16 swims in and 20 long walks - got to keep it up!!

Also pleased with food spends - I've eaten very well on approx. 23 pounds per week - I've been lucky with vouchers (3 pounds off 20 pounds at one supermarket) and also reduced items - I've got a well stocked freezer.

All in all a good month -just need to sort out my work situation - which fingers crossed should be resolved in Feb :)

  • Well it's a few months since my last update and quite a lot has happened since then - the work situation is no longer - as there is no work ! Since my last update I have left my job - luckily with a pay out! - Not a fortune but enough to subsidise time enough to sort myself out and decide how I will fund my life and debts until retirement. Ive updated my signature to show my current balances

  • I've updated my signature to show the latest balance - also had some excellent news regarding my morg - I've managed to get a great new fixed rate deal with the same lender which is saving me 66pound each month - unfortunately I cant use this to overpay on my debts as i'm living on the breadline at the moment so the reduction in morg payments is needed elsewhere. I'm hoping that my income will improve in the new year so that I can overpay again.

It's nearly two years since I joined this site and I'll say again its the best thing I ever did - I look forward to catching up on others updates and learn so much from others - it's fab.

    Fabulous work :T.

May I ask what your mortgage deal (in terms of APR etc.). Our fixed rate runs out in the Spring, need to think about what we do next.

Hope you drop in a bit more and let us know how you're getting on. Also hope your income improves :).
  • Great work on the mortgage - and yes, the right thing to do to keep your head above water for the time being with the saving. No point in throwing it at the debt and then potentially ending up with MORE debt as a result!
