4 x 4 - raison d'etre?

The point is they dont HAVE to justify themselves to you. If they want one, WHO CARES.
And yet everyone does, and there's normally the logic of man maths involved, If those who 4x4 want one then be honest, and cut the bull, there a want not a NEED.
The truth is that you could buy a 2k fiesta, maintain, insure and put fuel in it for the next 25years for less than the price Tag on an average 4x4. and it would still do the same job which is go from A-B.
Personally Iv never spent much on any car truck or van, iv bought Pickups for £400 and run them for years without spending sod all on them. It puts a big smile on my face when I think what the land Iv bought with cash saved is worth compared to what some car would have been worth.0 -

Can you show me where anyone on here has said they drive an x5 or similar because they *need* one??
Thats my point - everyone judges a premium 4x4 driver and says "oh oh he clearly doesnt need one" but he never said he did need one, he just wanted one.

Yeah, but not everyone wants to drive a £2K fiesta.

Good for you. Thats your choice.
I'd a £300 Fiat Marea diesel there for 4 months. Loved it. I took a lot of pleasure out of driving it for peanuts BUT i didnt drive around thinking that premium 4x4 drivers were *wrong*0 -

Absolutely true but we're talking about parked or temporarily stopped cars.0 -
I'll buy what I want when I want and Couldn't care less who thinks what.... But usually My vehicles are bought to do a job...
What else can I Tow 3.5 ton with one day then take Feed or water out to Livestock across fields the next? Then load up with 4 adults and a Machine on a trailer and go off to France? other than a 4x4? No TDCI Mondeo or Octavia will do what I need.0 -
Haven't bothered to read all the posts, but all I can say is
OP
chip
shoulder
that is all...............
Olias (Landrover Discovery driver - no I'm not a farmer, no I don't live in the mountans, yes I do need it.)0 -
I wonder is the chip on my shoulder so large it takes up an entire street that would normally allow two cars by, just to over compensate for my fragile as an eggshell ego, whereby I think that by displaying I have lots of disposable cash I might make up for the fact I'm in some kind of mid life crisis?Haven't bothered to read all the posts, but all I can say is

The days of the 10mpg 4.6L Range Rover are largely over
Oi! I used to get average 16 mpg with mine, with 18 possible on a gentle run and 14 towing a caravan.
They are very economical as long as you don't do anything silly like drive them.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -

I thought it had already been established that many saloon cars have a larger floor plan than many 4x4s.
Why does it have to be a question of ego? And does that apply to any premium brand of car regardless of if it is a 4x4? What about sports cars, executive saloons, or anything that offers anything over and above basic getting from A to B.
As for saying that all the toys and gadgets are a waste of time, well lets go back to basics, no electric windows, remote central locking, automatic choke, ABS, ESP (or equivalent) they are not needed and drivers should use their skill like what we used to have to. Hell, get rid of the starter motor and hand crank them like they used to. :rotfl:0
