No, its sales talk for ermmm... Premium 4x4s?
And yes, i do live in a different world to yours. Mines called "reality".
If scoring points on an internet forum is reality good luck to you as you post count reveals you most spend some time in "Reality", me Il go and join some real people in the pub, good luck to you and a Merry Christmas.scotsman4th wrote: »Because it's been said on a thread it's now fact?
I only really know (first hand) of 1 car v 4x4 accident (a vectra coincidentally).
Vectra 1 death out of 1 occupant, Landcruiser 0 deaths out of 2 occupants.
And I knew someone in a defender who was killed, means sod all doesn't it hardly factual, the truth is depends on the sort of crash, and If you really want you can use Google to back which ever side of the argument you so wish.
As I said I'm board now and have wasted enough time on pointless keyboard typing Merry Christmas to all Road users.0 -

My point exactly, (you dont say what else was involved in the collision though)0 -
It doesn't matter how many beacons boards or flashing lights both the wide load and escort has, at least 50% of drivers will not stop, driving around the escort to expect a 4.2m load to find a space on a road thats 4.1m wide. Then to boot have zero ability to reverse. Put a bank holiday into the mix and its carnage.
Have you tried signs that say "Please queue here"? This is England, I guarantee it'll work

For the love of the baby jesus, most on here who own or has owned a 4x4 has said they drive one "because they want to".
Few have said its for a genuine practical reason.
What more do you want?
I must admit I hadn't waded through the full 8 pages or so (which made the "cos I want to" approach clear) before posting that. It was actually intended to support the 4x4 drivers' right to choose. In return, I'd simply prefer that they didn't try to justify their choice with fairly spurious, and generally unsupportable, reasons.
Of course, when they have a supportable reason (such as notanewuser has given) then that's entirely different matter. Then they should be positively encouraged to share, or even provide evidence

Let me know when your tent wears out next and I'll send you a bra to replace it.

Someone got a grudge against 4x4 owners? Cannot afford to run one perhaps?
I know someone that rolled a Discovery, But i also know people that have been in other cars that have rolled. Escort Van, Ford Cortina, I was a passenger in a Mini when the driver locked the brakes and clipped the kerb then went over. Nobody died in any of them.
I have had several 4x4's they all served their purpose, Pulled many people out of silly situations. Went to the carboot one Sunday and came home with more money than i went with. Pulling people out of the mudbath.
If you see a car struggling to move and then sink, Dont follow them, Unless you have a Range Rover with Oversized Mud tyres and a 4" lift.

Maybe because they have an occasional but regular need to tow something which weighs more than a crisp packet? If you have a trailer plated for 3.5T capacity, you can't legally tow it even when empty with a vehicle not also capable of towing 3.5T.
You actually can. For pre-97 and B+E drivers it's the actual train weight that counts (Ifor Williams sent me a quote from the head of VOSA) rather than the gross weights. But still for a 3.5T plated trailer it probably weighs at least 500-1000kg empty so you'd need something big if you've got anything in it.Most modern cars may just be able to pull caravans , but will they do it safely ? There is such a thing as the cars towing limit , the cars gross train weight and the maximum technically permissible weight. Sadly a lot of people either ignore this or more dangerously are ignorant of this......
It's pretty difficult to find a modern car that can tow as much as 1500kg (my cut-off point as well) without going into the full size saloon/estate/4x4 category now. And you're right about safety; a 4x4 with a towing rating of 2000kg+ will be safer pulling at 1500kg caravan than a hatchback with a 1500kg rating.0 -
My point was, they're probably smaller than a lot of large exec cars.
I drive a pretty normal saloon, that's exactly the same length as a Nissan Pathfinder and 4" wider (I was looking at changing to something "smaller"), and it's never attracted any complaints. In fact it's been significantly bigger than every other 4x4 I've looked at (I want the ride height and practicality), whilst it's still smaller than a Jag X-Type, Mondeo or Vectra.
So you're right; most of the current offering 4x4's have a smaller footprint than most "full size" saloons.0
