    The last major global catastrophe by my understanding of all three words was World War II, and if you bought gold either just before or during that catastrophe you'd have waited nearly 30 years to see any profit (and much longer to see any real return).

    No, stock market crashes don't count as a major catastrophe, they're part of life.

    But really, for me, the only time to buy gold is when no one else wants to. Which was when I did.
